The St. Nicholas Hotel in St. Louis caught fire on January 4, 1884 in -26 degree weather. The water from the fire hoses instantly froze and the truck and ladder became entombed in tons of ice and had to be abandoned. Here are some pictures of it, there are probably better ones on the internet somewhere.

In Missouri, the mandatory retirement age is 70 for all judges in state courts.

I was reading about submarines on the internet and I came across some guy's post claiming that when he was a kid back in the 40s, he and his brother saw a periscope sticking up out of the water in the Mississippi as it went along the river. A couple of ex-navy guys then posted and quickly torpedoed and sank his story. " The river is too shallow for a sub and it wouldn't have been able to navigate the eddys and strong currents." I think the closest one that came to the Mississippi River was the U166 German U-boat that was sunk in 1942 in the Gulf, about 45 miles from the river.

Sunken German U-Boat Found 45 Miles From Mouth Of Mississippi

As I was reading all these stories I came across the submarine that was found in the Chicago River back in 1915, supposedly with the bones of a man and dog inside. I found it intriguing.
