There is nothing illegal about being an independent contractor. same goes for the barter system. However , the Government wants taxes. They will try to disprove , these relationships where ever they can. They call it " avoiding taxes ".... I agree with you , it should be the American way.

The Michigan system is quite different than a lot of other states. We have "township rule"... where most affairs are administered at the township level.
I know of several people , who pay very little property tax , seems , their property never gets revalued , along with the rest of us. That , in my mind , is bartering . They contribute something other than tax money to the Township coffers ,.........if you know what I mean...

I think the country as a whole needs to be drastically more self-sustaining. There should be incentives for starting businesses, more incentives for buying American (WHY are apples from New Zealand cheaper than the local ones, huh?), incentives for greener living, like using live people instead of machines for farming, and inventions that do not make us more dependent on things like oil from the Middle East.

If things keep going down hill , as they are now , the outcome , WILL be more new businesses. The independent businessman has always been the back bone of the economy, he will again , as more and more big conglomerates go by the wayside.
Investment tax credits are a better way of stimulating new build , than cutting corporate and wealthy taxes. By making business invest , it provides jobs , machinery , and builds our infrastructure. When there is demand , there will be investment. real investment , not just the promise of more cheaper good coming from a foreign country that already owns out debt.

I hope you're right -- except for the "if things keep going downhill" part.

Really, I do not know. The money has to go to the county, then it comes back. Property tax is public information. I am on the MTA broad.

No, THEY call it EVADING taxes.

Like you implied, AVOIDING taxes is legal, but EVADING taxes isn't.

Otherwise, someone might be convicted of TAX AVOISION.

Like the Dinosaurs dying out and leaving the landscape wide open for the little mammals to dominate?

Well, lets just hope the dead dinosaur carcass' aren't replaced with living Dinosaurs from China.
