Under Robert Reich's plan, during the Clinton administration, OSHA inspectors would have been required to enter any personal residence having one room used for home business activity to inspect for roller skates on stairways, kitchen counter microbe count, etc.

They were going to shut down any home business that had first or second hand smoke contacting any of the employees or residents occupying space anywhere in the home.

It will never happen,i heard about this rumor from a couple of friends of mine who work for OSHA compliance, they already have enough on their plate to deal with the way they have been dropping the ball the last few years, they have a lot of catching up to do with companies alone, companies have been tightening their safety policies over the last few year's,in a nutshell, demands by insurance companies who carry policies that pay for workers comp and such.
As to OSHA coming into a person's home, with or without a business, they have no jurisdiction, much like a church,or an insurance company.

Now I have to agree with you there.

I just repaired a pair of blue jeans for DD that she received for Christmas and wore/wash one time.

After showing off my repair to the elastic band to DH, he noticed the front button had fallen off DURING MY REPAIR OF WAIST BAND.

label said.. "made in china"

The problem is how to make American made products competitive in price with the imports.

you have 2 ink pens.. you think they write equally the same quality. One pen cost $2, and one cost 12 for $2.

Which one do you buy? That is what happened to radios, tv etc.

The foreign markets under cut us in price to drive out the American competitiion . Eventually, all that is left is foreign made products.

Our trade policy is part to blame...

also to blame is the notion that because you are American, and work 40 hours per week, you DESERVE to make $70 - $80 grand a year to do a job that is not hard to do or hard to train.

Like picking up a garbage can and tossing its contents into the back of a big truck. Do you really need to pay someone $36 per hour?
But some make that much to work as a city sanitation worker. how about the guys who plow the roads??
I know it is an important job... but it is SUPPLY and DEMAND.
How hard would it be to find someone to learn that job in a week's training? So why do these easy to train jobs earn so much money?

and when the manufacturing industry was fading away, I read how America was becoming a "service oriented" society. I didn't know exactly what that meant, (I was a kid in the 80's) but looking back I know realize that that meant that we Americans could afford to lose our industries because we would provide service (telemarketing, banking telemarketing, etc) to the rest of the world because we are the "smart, educated Americans" and the world would have to come to us, if they want things done "right".

Well, look at us know. There are schools in India and China . They don't have to come to USA or England for a "proper" education.

US business have discovered they can hire customer service reps from India, Asia and pay them a helluva lot less than US workers.

Have you notice when assembling items made from China how the manuals are written with very simple grammatical and spelling errors? It is obvious, the writer of the manuals do not speak english, or speak english very poorly.

It looks like our safety net of being a service oriented society did not hold up.

Like I said in another post.... eventually our children will be picking peaches... they haven't figured out how to outsource harvesting fresh produce grown in our country yet.

Yes, there is a way but, it will not happen. The EPA needs to back off so our heavy industry CAN operate here.
