I always wondered if there was some sort of affinity between Mexicans and Native Americans in the U.S.
From what I've studied, most American Indians living north of the current US/Mexican border had little daily intercourse. The Tonto O'odham sadly are split by the border in Arizona. The Comanches were basically traders between the Olmecs/Aztecs and plains tribes.
During the time of the Aztec Empire the Comanches were confined to a small area of present-day Colorado where they eked out an existence mainly from gathering roots and other plants. It was not until more than a century after the arrival of the Spaniards that they acquired horses and moved out to take over the southern plains and begin their yearly raids into Mexico.
I have traveled a lot in Mexico and have seen and known a lot of Mexican Americans in the USA, and what I see with my eyes with physical characteristics is a population that is mostly of native indigenous blood. The country is a large part Mestizo (as are a lot of the Central American and South American countries), and my guess when you say "Mestizo" it is probably 80% native blood and 20% Spanish blood (or even less). And there are a lot of Mexicans 100% native blood or close to it.
I personally have never seen a Mexican person who looked like they even had one drop of African blood in them. I think that is way, way overstated.
If you have ever been to Spain you see what Spanish people look like. They are very white European looking often with fair colored hair. In my opinion I do not see many Mexicans that look like people in Spain. That is a small minority.
Here is what Wikipedia says about Mexico's ethnic breakdown:
-65% Mestizo (and as I said when you say Mestizo you are talking predominately Indigenous blood with a much smaller amount of Spanish blood)
-18% Amerindian
-16% white
-<1% black, asian or other combined
....so there you have it, really 83% of the population is mostly indigenous blood.
I agree with you hundred percent. However, Wikipedia is not a good source for accurate information. There definitely isn't 16% of pure whites in Mexico. I wouldn't put that number over 5%.
Most Mexicans are a mix of Native American, European, African, and Asian ancestries. Mexicans have genetic ancestral components from virtually every part and corner of the globe.
The main reason why Mexico wanted American settlers in Texas was so they could drive the Comanches out.
Ive seen some Mexicans that look identical to East Indians from India and some look more Peruvian, and some could even pass as Iraqi
There is definitely a 'generic' Mexican look with pronounced Native American genes but there are LOTS of exceptions as well. I don't know why people don't want to accept that and just move on.
Funny that you mentioned Iraquis, I work with a lot if them. Some of us are definitely interchangeable.

Genetic admixtures studies on Mexico by each region:
Red = Native American
Blue = European
Yellow = Sub-Saharan African
Each circle shows the average admixture proportions in major urban Mexican populations, not ethnic compositions in each city.
The following map shows the population density and distribution. If you combine this map with the other one, you can get an idea of what is the admixture of the average Mexican.
Lastly, there is a study that estimates the average admixture various countries in the following form, based on migration patterns through the centuries in each society.
