Is it something personal between them or the countries? Why do Salvadorians considered it an insult when they are mistaken and called a Mexican? Actually, in New York if you call a Puerto Rican or Dominican or Salvadorian a Mexican they take it personal.
I think most of all, they resent the assumption in the US that all Hispanics are Mexicans (which might not apply to the Northeast so much). Like, when a Salvadoran is asked "How do you celebrate Cinco de Mayo", it's like asking an Australian how they celebrate the Fourth of July.
Canadians put their flag on their backpacks, so people don't think they are Americans. What Americans are very insensitive about is that people in other countries are also proud of the country they are from.
However, it is true that all of Latin America is pretty negative on Mexico. I've known Latin American businessmen from places like Colombia and Chile who travel on business, and they hate going to Mexico. Mexicans have some detectable aggressive edginess to them that makes Latin Americans feel uncomfortable there. Mexico, generally, doesn't even observe Siesta, like they do everywhere south of there.

Who knows? You must ask them.
As Mexican I see some salvadorians being rude with mexicans, but I don't know why, maybe is like Mexicans with US Americans, big country Vs small country attitudes.

LOL It's not only Salvadorians. No one wants to be mistaken by people from another country.(I've seen Americans angry when asked if they are Canadians, BTW).
Americans have that bad habit of thinking of "latin americans" as a pack, but the countries are different, especially when you go south. And you don't need higher IQ to guess that no one wants to be mistaken by people from a country that's constantly on the news for negative things related to immigration (whether that country deserves it or not).

I was asked only one time in my life if I celebrate that holiday. I saw it on the school's calendar throughout school, but didn't really think much of it. I always thought it was a Halloween holiday that other people celebrate. Only until last year when I was asked about it I asked what that was and they had to explain it to me. I'm Salvadorian. I don't like being called Mexican. My mom says she doesn't trust Mexicans when applying at job agencies, that they can steal her identification information, that they are known for doing that.

Come on, the majority of Salvadorans currently living in the U.S. are illegal, so they are not more honest than Mexicans.

They don't take it personally, they just think you are an ignorant buffoon who doesn't know Mexico and El Salvador are not the same place. Which, usually, you would be.

If you call a Japanese person Chinese they get mad, and Iranians get mad if you call them Arabs so I think it's like others said.
They don't know that to most Americans they seem the same and which ever group dominates is what the rest will get lumped into.
Mexicans by far dominate the "hispanics" in the USA in numbers.
