Very sad. I hate hearing about these drowning situations. It's right up there with leaving kids in hot cars. They just seem so avoidable.

Some people just have the tendency to "float" more easily than others (more often this seems to be the case with women, in my experience anyway). I happen to be a "sinker", lakes are definitely not my friend.

Swimming in a pool is one thing, but even i've been swimming in a lake where i've gone to swim out to a floating raft or a swimming platform and got halfway there and thought "Damn, this thing is further out than I thought". I'm a pretty good swimmer too, or so i'd like to think.

It's unfortunate.
Yup, and unless you've received some degree of training and tested that training under artificial duress (i.e., exhaustion, cold), then when the exhaustion hits it can quickly become fatal ... unfortunately.

Been there once when a storm cell and poor decision making left me no more than a 1000ft out in a cool and gusty ME lake with no life vest and partially sunk canoe. That experience caused me to heavily recalibrate my opinions of my swimming ability. Lost a pair of jeans to that lake, but I was able to retrieve the canoe and my hoodie.

Under slightly different circumstances (e.g., colder water, sustained wind) I could have easily drowned and water no more than 8-12'. Lesson learned ... now the life vest stays on in the canoe regardless of how annoying it might be.

Houghtons Pond is notorious for drop offs. Add in the fact that the water is still rather cold and this is a recipe for disaster. Recent reports here on Cape Cod have been warning people if the dangers of hypothermia and to exercise extra caution boating and recreating on the water this time of year.

This is just heartbreaking. One of the teens died too.
Green Hill is a beautiful park with a lovely large pond. It is obviously not for swimming.
Worcester Tech is right there at the entrance to the park. My son attends Worcester Tech. I know it was not one of his friends but I have a bad feeling it is one of the students. I feel awful for everyone involved.

Worst thing about trying to save someone drowning is they have a tendency to take you with them.

So awful. The officer leaves behind a wife and two kids. I'm sure families worry about their police officer family members but more so in terms of getting shot or stabbed. Not drowning trying to save someone. Ugh.
