How is sitting in an office that one commuted to in 60 minutes vs WFH going to fix any of this? It doesnt matter.

Why should I care? We already have a glut of unskilled labor and automation is only going to make it worse.

On the notion (and reality) that we aren't having enough babies of our own.

The wealthier urban-dwelling Chinese are already behaving like us ... with their noses buried in their smartphones and binge drinking cocktails. I think all the phenomena mentioned by mdovell are actually worldwide now and not just limited to the United States. The exception might be Islamic populations.

Which is scary, but a relative in the UK always talks about how the Russians/Poles, etc. (maybe the digital revolution just lagged among those people IDK?) are taking over many occupations there not only due to their lower cost; but that (despite their non-native language) those kids still know how to interact with other humans unlike many natives now (and businesses have picked up on this). The technogeeks can stomp their feet up and down all day long, but fact is you cannot always replace a human being.

So why is population contraction a bad thing? We already have plenty of people. I’d rather take quality over quantity.

What domestic policy could possibly be enacted to address this? Immigration was the solution, but that doesn't seem to be too popular with half the nation.

Ummm...one could write a book on the negative effects of population contraction. As for the quality vs. quantity, we need a. to throw more incentives for middle-class to have kids and b. a sane merit/needs based immigration policy that the rest of the world has already long adopted.

what jobs do we not have enough people for? The crappy ones that no one wants because everyone, even the immigrants think they're too good for.
