One can sign up prior to. There might not be much of a 'crunch'.

The updated weekly vaccine report has actual population numbers.

For 75 and older, 75% have gotten one dose so far.
For 65-74, 52% have gotten one shot.
50-64 is 24% and 30-49 is 18%.

Well, I was able to easily register on the site anyway and received a confirmation text immediately. Now, whether it works and really alerts me to available appointments at some point? Who knows?

LOL - I think initially it will only work for lining up appointments at the mass vaccination sites, but there's been some noises made indicating the possibility of expanding the applicability.

As posted at the top of the page, this is a pre-registration to get you into the queue. You are notified when an appointment is available. You have 24 hours to accept and if you don't, back into the queue you go.
Under the previous system, you had a million people fighting for 40K weekly spots at the same time.

The new system is a lot less work. Rather than visiting the appointment site all the time and polling it repeatedly for availability each time, this way, you can relax and they can push the notification to you, when there's a slot available, and so long as you're responsive, you've got the "first available".

The NY Times vaccination tracker is showing 24% of Mass residents have received at least one dose and 11.8% have received two doses as of today. Still a long ways to go yet, but, there is steady progress and it's adding up.
