A question: what is the season for fiddleheads in Maine? Are they still available mid to late May?

I'm tentatively planning on visiting Maine mid to late May this year. Yes, I am aware of blackflies.

Mother's Day is the rule of thumb. There are places you can find them as early as the end of April. It really depends on the weather. If things stay as they are now the fiddleheads will be up early. It's 68 degrees here in Freeport today! Last year we were ice fishing on the Androscoggin on March 20 and there was still three feet of snow on the ground.

I went for a walk today out in our fiddlehead field.

I saw the first fiddlehead of the season. It is too small, I had to lift the floatsum away to expose it. The heads are working on coming out from the rootmass. A couple inches to push up through the floatsum and they will be ready to pick.

I had made the offer to one fellow [he tips on my land] that he and his family can come here to pick fiddleheads in the spring, if he wants to for market [he does what he can to support a family].

So I am not going make the offer to anyone else to pick large quantities. However if anyone wants to pick a small amount just for their own family [less than 10-gallons for example]. You are welcome to contact me, and pick on my land.

We usually pick our favorite local bed here in southern ME a week or so before Memorial Day, though signs indicate an early season this year.

I wouldn't get too excited about any fiddleheads I find at this point. You can always find a few early ones with the warm weather like we have had lately but next week they will surely suffer a set back from cold weather and frost. The beds will receive a hard freeze next week and any emerging sprouts will blacken and die. That will slow them down for at least a few weeks. This warm spell will not last.

You will still be able to get fiddleheads at the end of May in the "normally colder valleys" in Maine. We are all used to hearing about the normally colder valleys in weather forecasts. I live in one.
