I checked out my two best early fiddlehead spots today. At one of them there were very few. I got a couple of handfuls. At the second one they were farther along and I managed to pick about 6-7 pounds. No great shakes but not bad for the first day. They're really kind of late this year. Last year a week before Mother's day I picked 30 pounds in about an hour at the first spot where they weren't even up yet. This marks the beginning of about a three week season. We have the early ones, the bulk of them in about two weeks, and some late ones that take a bit longer.
The black flies were out fairly heavily though were in buzz mode, not biting. I did pick off a couple of ticks when I got home.
So tonight is grilled chicken,a little Red Diamond Merlot, some "When Pigs Fly" sourdough bread, and steamed fiddleheads with butter and malt vinegar ! Yum-O! as Rachel Ray would say.

They were great! I had two bowls! Nothing like fresh fiddleheads. I hope you all get some soon! Now to break out the old cream of fiddlehead soup recipe!

I went out kayaking today. I visited our fiddlehead patch.

Most of it is 12" to 18" underwater. I did see three 'clusters' of fiddleheads popping up from under the water.
