I told him we should pick some for dinner and before you know it the shirts were coming off (as we needed something to put our harvest in) and we had around 10 lbs. The black flies and skeeters were relentless on the paddle back to the truck but it was all worth it. We ate a big batch last night (I saute ours with olive oil and fresh minced garlic and ground black pepper after blanching them for a few minutes). The kids say they taste like a combination or spinach and broccoli. We will freeze some later today. DW is bagging up several packages to give away at church this morning.
Best to all!
And surely as goes the line in the old hymn...

"Though troubles assail
And dangers affright,
Though friends should all fail
And foes all unite;
Yet one thing secures us,
Whatever betide,
The scripture assures us,
The Lord will provide.

The birds without barn
Or storehouse are fed,
From them let us learn
To trust for our bread:
His saints, what is fitting,
Shall ne'er he denied,
So long as 'tis written,
The Lord will provide.

The fiddleheads were always a welcome change to Early settlers, as the root cellar full of potatoes, beets, turnips, pumpkin and all the salted and otherwise preserved meat was getting to be monotonous. Parsnips are often held in the ground until spring . They are sweeter that way.

Last Fiddleheads!

We had our last fiddleheads for the season tonight. It's kind of a bittersweet goodbye. We love you fiddleheads but you stayed long enough! We will love you again next year, but now it's on to greener pastures....like spinach and beet greens!!

Hello!

Right now today, our fiddlehead area is in full production. In about a 40 foot wide circle you can fill a 5-gallon bucket. We have maybe 5 acres right now in fiddleheads.

In a week the season will be passing and a week after that it will likely be entirely gone.

There exists a limit on how much I can stand bent over.

So if anyone wants to come and pick, you are welcome to it. but it needs to be soon.

My husband bought some from a road side seller. He thought they may like them at the restaurant for a change. They were a huge hit!
Nice for a change.
