My son says that the Maine sledding forums that he posts in are having bets as to who can guess the closest time to iceout on Moosehead. One is saying 4th of July! How funny is that? I'm not chancing it, just in case I'll stick to southern and just downeast (as opposed to way downeast) Maine!

Just checked Mothers Day is MAY 11TH! You'd best hope for a green mothers day if you know what's good for you! With Daffodils and Tulips!

And fiddleheads! They announced they will be riding the ITS snowmobile trails well into May this year. I think the smart money is taking the late ice out dates this year! The 4th of July might be a stretch but who knows...I have pictures of me holding up a June 15th newspaper standing on a snow bank in Greenville back in the early 80's so anything is possible I guess.

Default fiddleheads

FYI- I know a lot of you love those funky green fuzzy curly topped things... I'm still not eating anything green and fuzzy I don't care HOW you cook em'!

I still think they feel like catterpillars(?) in my mouth!

You can keep the snow in Kittery, thank you!

Ice out in Moosehead is heavily dependent on wind and rain, as well as warm temps.

I have been trolling in the spring along the edge of the ice pack and the needles of ice will all be standing up on the edge of the pack. They look like those crystals you see hanging from chandeliers. If you are paddling a canoe you can hear them tinkle like ice cubes in a glass. Salmon hang out under the dge of the ice pack and it's good fishing when the ice is half out of a lake. Just beware that when the wind shifts the entire ice pack can move across the lake and you might not be able to get back to where you put in.

Then the salmon fishing drops off a little until the magic day when the water temperature reaches 45 degrees and the salmon go on a feeding frenzy. That's the day to be on the lake!

Since we missed most of the winter...this new snow fall is very exciting for us and we are just loving it. (YORK) So, thanks...I'll take it. So pretty and the camera is just a clicking away. Brings back many wonderful memories of years past in Maine.

It's still snowing lightly though the sky is getting lighter just past noon. We have about 6 inches of new snow. It's melting on the roads and driveways pretty well though so I'm not going to bother plowing it. No biggie and it will be gone when the sun comes out.
