When environmentalists are looking out for the the best of both people and the environment they're reasonable to work with. We might not agree with each other on everything but they're not irrational.

Sure, there are people like that out there. But they don't all drive Volvos. And they aren't all environmentalists. One gentleman described a man who was just a plain maniac in allerting everyone about everything like oil in a puddle, or snowmobile trails displacing the moose, and stuff like that. This guy he describes actually sounds a little mentally displaced himself.
I've honestly never been called a gentleman before. I did mention oil but the rest is embellished. This guy isn't mentally displaced (what a nice PC way of saying he's whacked out), he's a pain in the arse who thrives on what he does.

We got those out here in California too. There's one guy who is manic depressive, or schizophrenic, and obviously forgets to take his meds occasionally. He shows up at every Council meeting, and everyone knows he's going to take a side and fight tooth and nail for anything he can get. But you gotta just take it in stride. Because... that's democracy. Would we have it any other way?
If you'd like to DM me your mailing address I'll send your guy a friend. I might even poke air holes in the box.

Quote:
And that gets me to another point. A lot of people get it into this panic mode, like if they don't just fight to the death over whatever rights they believe they have, they think everything's going to be taken away from them. I'm not saying this can't be based on reality occasionally, but that when you get people like that on both sides, what else would you expect but a $hit fest?
Nobody's panicking here.

Quote:
Every body feels that something's going to be taken away from them. yes, even the "environmentalists." They think that northern Mainahs are out there, right this minute, greedily running over flowers and fawns in their ATVs, polluting the world with their engine noise.
Now that's the kind of environmentalist we can do without. If those folks don't know that fawns and flowers aren't on the ground in February they shouldn't be here telling us what to do.

Ya, I know...but it was so easy!

Quote:
But on the other hand, you have the "rednecks" who think the environmentalists are gonna take their land away, and assign a 50% income tax to pay for a single black mother's welfare in St. Lious with 6 kids.
If they don't get the land they work like hell to take away land owner rights to use their property the way the land has been used for many generations. OMG don't cut down that tree! Maine is the most generous welfare state in the nation. Please don't send people from St. Louis.

Quote:
Well, I've rambled like a drunken fool, and probably contradicted myself to boot, but i guess my point is that if anyone needs to shange anything about themselves its to not think and act like everyone else out there just wants to take everything away from you. That's a fast track to paranoia, bitterness, bigotry, and ultimately sadness.
You want Mainers to change? My apologies again but it's too easy again - you're not from here are you?

(Oh, and if you're wondering why a guy from California is posting here it's because i can't wait to see your beautiful state, as my wife and I are coming out in June for a little trip. Iv'e always wanted to get up there (lived in upstate NY for a time) but never could. This time I hope to get a feel for what it's really like, with a view to a possible move in 2-3 years.)
Enjoy your vacation!

I set that one up for you, pal.

No, I don't want Mainers to change. You can't change other people anyway; we can only change ourselves.

I'm sorry if i said anything to make you defensive, but i really wasn't trying to be condescending or anything like that.

EDIT: Oh wait a sec... yeah i think i missed the slide of humor there... dammit it happens every time!

My day's work was canceled thanks to a dead battery in my vehicle this morning. I have to entertain myself some how! =)

Is that "thanks to a dead battery" or "thank heavens for my dead battery!"?

I'd rather have worked. I had a delivery to make and a check to collect. There's always Thursday!

I have a saab, not a Saab.

A '99 saab sedan with no heater. My DW recently bought a 2008 Chevy Aveo [which she loves], and I have a '57 Willy.

As to the 'Volvo line', first off I would like to clarify that no UT is below the line. I see the line to be a crooked or serpentine line of demarcation. If we first agree that the Maine UTs are rural / no-price / low-tax-base and absolutely non-Volvo; then we can begin to see the Volvo gradients as you travel further South, or closer toward higher population densities.

Actually, Sagadahoc, Knox, and Lincoln Counties all have UT's. All are coastal and below Bangor.

Gotcha, I've got a saab... 97, heater works, the antenna doesn't go up and down tho. Got a 99 f-150 too. Both are great vehicles to drive, depending on what you are doing. I prefer to haul lumber and trash in the truck, but sometimes...

We have had a volvo,. NEVER again. You could buy new cars for what it costs to maintain.
