What is it? I know exactly what it is, but many may not. It's known by various names - this version I borrowed from Forest Beekeeper. As a concept, it's a little hard to describe, but maybe with the assistance of others, it can be done.

It also leads me to propose another related concept: the "2-step-move-to-Maine-procedure" whereby the immigrant moves first somewhere south of the "Line of Demarcation", then, after several years or so, if they choose, they would move north of the Line. They would then be better prepared and acclimated.

In any case, anyone want to try their hand at defining the Line?

LOL

I have heard folks describe it as just South of Bangor.

While others seem to place it near Augusta, or somewhere in relationship to Augusta.

It is certainly very clear that areas: along the Western border [Franklin, Somerset counties], the North [Aroostook, Piscataquis and Penobscot counties], and the North-east coast [Washington county]; are as a group a far different environment than the urban areas [York, Cumberland, Sagadahoc counties].

Folks say "Maine" but they can mean totally different environments.

The Volvo Line, I've heard it called, the line between the Two Maines. I draw it from Bath up to Augusta and then down to Newfield on the New Hampshire border, wiht some outliers such as Camden and Damariscotta. Others take it from Belfast to Waterville and then to Fryeburg or Bethel. My basic rule of thumb is the point at which the local focus is north toward Bangor or south toward Portland.
