yep! Whenever the kids were asked to contribute to bake sales and the like, we made doughnuts! I used to have a recipe that made 100 DOZEN Yes you read that right... quite a production line for a home kitchen, even stranger in a one-room cabin! Thank god for the church table! We did lots of powder sugar ones and some chocolate frosted... the little kids did the shaking, the biggest one put the still sometimes VERY warm doughnuts from the draining area into the bag of sugar, and the middle ones got to frost.
The PTA and the 4H were always glad to see us coming! Wonder why...
You know, I cannot IMAGINE doing that now, though.

Apple fritters spark such wonderful kitchen memories with my mother...the sun streaming in the windows, flour and laughter everywhere, as we made fritters and danced around the table to the "oldies" rock and roll she'd have jammin in the background...
Those were days I loved as a child, and I'll always cherish.
When I used to go up to visit my folks , we used to get some wonderful donuts from a shop over in Perry Maine. They were unfilled and unfrosted or sprinkled, just delicious cake style donuts; the family favorite was the SQUASH donuts but they were all good!
Sometimes at camp we couldnt get those donuts and the convience camp store had boxed donuts with cinnamon, sugared, plain and SQUASH! They did just fine with a cuppa coffee before going out on the lake!
2 cup flour
2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup sugar
4 eggs
1 cup milk
4 apples, chopped
Mix dry ingredients, set aside.
In separate bowl, beat eggs, stir in milk and apples.
Combine with dry ingredients, do not over-stir!
Drop 1 Tablespoon at a time into oil you have heated to 375 degrees.
Fry until golden brown.
Serve with warmed maple syrup, or place 1 tsp cinnamon and ½ cup sugar in a paper bag, add warm fritters and shake to coat!
Oooh, an apple fritter making party!!! Even on my low-fat/low-sugar eating plan (cuz I don't do DIETS, lol) that sounds good. I think I wanna come... I'll dance and sing, but you may not like it. Just fair warning my friends...
Wait for me! Wait for me!! Don't start without me...... I've decided I'm NOT on a diet this week. I just can't do it. I've been good for a while now, really! I've even lost 6 pounds since Christmas! I deserve a break. DH is home for a few days, and we're being very bad!! It's all his fault, of course. He's out now buying ice cream and cookie dough.
