Downtown Macon now has almost 2,000,000 square feet of unused office space. That should say enough.
wow,you are way off.the latest market survey done in 2011 shows there is only 900,000sf of office space downtown and of that 86% of it is leased.you cant just make up stuff and not think someone will check.

Prove it. What "market survey"? Back a few years ago, Macon brought in a guy from Memphis who specializes in revitalizing cities. At that point, we had over 1,000,000 square feet unused. He was obviously blown away and pretty much said that it is absolutely pathetic. Of course, those in attendance were mortified, as this didn't go hand in hand with their "head up their butts" attitude.
So show us the "market survey". I can't wait to see it.
And honestly - you're talking about 900,000 square feet like it's a good thing! My god, man! Can you deny riding down 2nd Street and being amazed at store-front after store-front that has crap painted on their windows trying to create the illusion that there's a business inside, when in fact - there is NOTHING? Come on, man. Get real.

first you're lumping office space and retail space together now.In your orignal quote you stated there was 2million sf of office space alone.second there is only 8 million sf of retail space in all of Bibb county and as of dec 2011 it was 76% leased.I do not disagree there is a lot of empty storefronts but as for office downtown still remains viable office area( 83% leased.).as for where my info comes from it comes from one of the largest realestate brokerage companies in the southeast.

Errrrrrrrr - 83%? Bwahahaha. Do you really believe that, or are you saying that it's all leased, yet the people leasing have no need to open up anything because they're just so happy to be leasing something in downtown Macon?
Come on, man. Take a look outside. Open your eyes. Ride down 2nd Street and pay attention.
I love Macon. I grew up here, moved away, and came back. The downtown area is thriving. I live in the Vine-Ingle community, we have great stores, and a tight knit sense of community. People truly do have to make the best of where they live, I hated it growing up but now I appreciate the night life, the arts community (we have so many community theatres!), the museums, the historical value, the musical legacy...the list goes on.
Yes, there are ghettos. There is crime, there are drugs, there are hoodlums and gangstas and rednecks and everything else...but there are also hundreds of people who want to turn this place around. The crowd that owns the downtown locations now, the owners of Roasted, The Rookery (and now Dovetail), the Hot Plates group (Dolce, Tic Toc, Barefoot), obviously have great plans to make this city better and if the community will come together we can make it even better!
