I stand corrected...she did have >75MPH winds at landfall though.
Yes - it had 75mph "gusts" at many locations - sustained winds were less.
I only correct the mention of Sandy as a hurricane - because it is my fear that if people think Sandy was "the big hurricane" that Long Island has been long over-due for - that they'll breath a sigh of relieve and slide back into complacency - making the next "real" hurricane that much worse for everyone here.

It wasn't a hurricane in terms of winds but that is minor, the larger issue was the storm surge. Hurricane Gloria hit at low tide and was fast moving, we were lucky the storm speed increased on Sandy from around 15 to 30 MPH, I will take Gloria any day over this. We went through 3-4 high tides that really never left and the storm surge for bay areas was 8 -9 ft over astronomical high tide Monday night. The 1938 hurricane was moving at 70MPH and also had a huge storm surge but we didn't have nearly the development.
There was a meeting the other night in Manhattan for residents on Fire Island, many who lost their houses want to rebuild. If they build on Fire Island they will build anywhere.
In case anyone is interested NOVA on PBS is airing an episode, called Inside the Megastorm, this week about Sandy's impact on the NY area. Long Island, however, is barely mentioned. They must have thrown this show together in a hurry, postponing the scheduled episode on Stonehenge.
And the affected areas will be paying it anyway for years to come.
