It's not the storm or even the people...it's the politics of the Island. When things that don't make any sense at all, start to make sense...it's time to go. Nothing goes easy....always the hard road taken there.
I looked in southern UT. I didn't need 3800 sf, but it seems that the nicer neighborhoods have the larger homes. One house I really liked was only $599K for approx 3200 sf LOL
I've seen homes on the bench in Salt Lake City, $499k, prop taxes $3850/yr. Oh, and the property tax bills go up $100 in a normal year... not like here on LI, where my taxes soar about $800-$1000 in a year.
Management and upper execs just about everywhere are grossly overpaid! These big "bonuses" they receive are sickening. I don't understand how much longer this can go on? Ridiculous...I hope they fire all of management/execs at lipa.
Meanwhile, this [expletives deleted] idiot built an entire nuclear power plant from the ground up without receiving full permission to run it and said scrapped power plant cost LI'ers $6 billion over 30 years.
Is there an icon for throwing up?
Discovery channel had an hour long special on that plant. It would have been the safest IN THE WORLD at the time . Our power would have been a lot cheaper if the crazies didn't get it closed down. The plants that you see melting down are the first generation plants. we are now on 4th or 5th generation designs. these designs can take a power outage and not melt down.
Blame the long island progressive coalition for our high rates and the closing of shoreham.

Ha, we can't build a Sonic, White Castle or a sports arena...who in their right mind dreamed a nuclear power plant would make it?!

They can go on as long as you and the other LI'ers pay their rates, which happen to be 5x the national average for electric. Yes, LIPA is grossly overpriced and incompetent, but as LI'ers we overpay for almost everything, utilities are just the tip of the iceberg.

The largest reason our rates are so high is that we are still paying for Shoreham, additionally LIPA has no funding for basic infrastructure and maintenance, you don't just mothball a billion dollar power plant without any consequences. Many promises were made when they got rid of LILCO, none of them came true.

You're oversimplifying the degree to which LIPA is dysfunctional. The cost of mothballing was just one of the charges passed on to rate payers. You're also actively paying for property taxes on the Shoreham property, which is a huge bill, and the overall cost of building the plant, which I think was over $6 billion or so. You can thank Cuomo the 1st for that lovely deal.
But if you look at your monthly bill, you'll see the catch-all energy charge, which is not explained anywhere. It effectively doubles the cost of your electricity. Call LIPA customer service and they'll explain that's to pay for increases in oil and natural gas, with the former being used less and less and the later trading at record lows. Of course, each year we hear about the $100-150 million or more in over billings that enable LIPA to give you a $5.00 credit. In any other business, this would be very illegal.
You have to imagine if there's no money left over in the kitty for infrastructure and maintenance, it's because infrastructure and maintenance are not as high of a priority as management bonuses and perks. In fact, there has to be a huge amount of apathy from senior management to run such a crappy utility. When I consulted at LILCO, in the nineties, the culture was 'go along to get along.' In other words, don't rock the boat. Seems little has changed.
