I will soon be commuting on the Ronkonkoma line from Penn into Suffolk. I currently have AT&T and while driving east on the LIE, I get very sketchy service when I go beyond exit 46. It has gone to a point where the clock on my phone shows the wrong time and I lose my GPS signal on my phone.
How is AT&T cellular service on the Ronkonkoma line? I will be using my phone for data 90 percent of the time. I know Verizon is king everywhere. How is T-Mobile service? I am nearing the end of my contract and would be willing to switch providers if the signal quality is consistent. Currently I have a 3G phone but will soon be upgrading to 4G.
I wondered the same thing. I have ATT and it always seems slow on the LIRR. I think it might be that when the train is moving you are moving signals from tower to tower. I wonder if Verizon is better.

Not much better in certain places. Whole area from Woodside to Jamaica is a death vortex for every cell carrier.
Verizon works ok once you pass Jamaica, but you will bounce from 4G-3G-1X a lot.
They have wifi- how are people using their laptops then? They dont provide cell service but they have wires or whatever in the tunnel now... Only some carriers do. Thats prob not LIRR's doing, its prob the actual carrier... But yeah

The WiFi that's available on the LIRR is powered by Optimum Online, if you don't have cable service, you won't be able to use the wifi connections.

People are probably using their cell phones to create mobile "hotspots." Hotspots are like mini, mobile Wifi networks powered by and using a cell phone to access the internet. Many of the wifi networks you see on the LIRR are probably peoples' personal, private hotspots.

People are either using optimum wifi or they have air cards/mi-fi's. Air cards/mi-fi's are basically cell phones without the voice part. It essetially provides the wifi connection via the cell network.
