Who wants to start placing bets on whether or not there will be service tomorrow? Hmmm?!

My company sent an email out to everyone saying that we're open tomorrow and that if we can't make it in, we have to use a personal or vacation day... i hate being penalized for something that's out of my control. blah.

I'm also afraid to not go in because we're on the brink of lay offs...we are all walking around on egg shells over there not knowing from one day to the next if you'll have a job.

This is exactly it. the LIRR doesn't realise how many people it's screwing over. We don't all make $95,000 a year punching holes in tickets.

Make alternate plans. Hell, get a hotel in the city if you have to. There are plenty of people who have been out of work for YEARS that would make it to work in place of you.

I hate reading posts like this. It's like they expect you to put yourself in harm's way just to line their pockets. Unless you're a hospital worker or something like that, it's just cheap and exploitative--especially if you fly a desk. One word: telecommute.

I can't wait for the day when companies like that are complaining that they can't find good help.

Not every job can have people telecommute. Mine, for example. It's not exploitative, it's the nature of the beast. I knew this when I got into the field 6 years ago...but that's most of NYC for ya. Teaching wasn't an option for me so I accept what I have chosen but the reality of it is that no one is going to be happy with me if I don't show up tomorrow.

Fully telecommutable positions only tempt them to think of offshore outsourcing anyway. It's better to have a job that requires plenty of "face time" in this day and age.

I'll show up tomorrow too, transportation permitting. Who wants to sit home alone anyway? Boring! I'm not going to go driving in the snow if I were to stay home. I'd much rather go to work than sit around. I'm not some wussy borderline agoraphobic wannabe hausfrau who thinks "snow days" are a God-given right (nor am I a teacher, for whom they actually are an expected part of their job).

So funny...b/c I feel the same way. It's not like my boyfriend or friends will come trek out in the snow to see my @ss...nor am I gonna drive anywhere. Sitting on the couch watching TV and posting on citydata gets old after a while...haha. I don't know teachers can think this is fun. I'd rather be @ work.

Personally anyone who has more fun @ home on a snowday then they do @ work must not be lucky enough to love their job. Yeah my job is demanding, but it's fun as hell.

So if you don't get to work, you lose your job.

Must be tough to live as a wage slave to someone else.
