I couldn't imagine not having a basement. They're pretty common on Long Island. The exception are the homes near the water.

I have friends in VA Beach and none of the houses in the area have basements, they have whats called a FROG (Family Room Over Garage). Basically, the area over the garage is a finished space that can be used for various purposes...its actually pretty nice. Also, many homes that don't have basements have attached garages.

Parent's house had a partially finished basement and used it seldomly. First house owned was a Levitt with no basement. Didn't really miss it. Now that we have one and paid to fully finish it, we still don't use it, other than storage. At least storage is good.

In hot humid weather like the present I can go down to my wood shop in the basement, cut down on the AC up stairs and be very comfortable so its a great asset for me to have one.

I have a 70's wood paneled basement with linoleum tiles which I never upgraded or use for anything other than storage. When the kids get a little older, I might consider refinishing it but have no desire to do so now. Plus, the basement is very humid and has a moist smell which I hope will not cause a problem if we finish it.

I love my basement. We have storage in one area, laundry and of course the best part the kids and their toys. I have a 6,2,8months and we can let them loose in the basement especially the older two and the house still looks like humans live there. Yea basement I love you. Just wish the ceiling was higher given that I am 6'8 but hey you can't have everything perfect.

I live in a flood zone, so no basement here. My husband and I both grew up in Levit homes, so we didn't really "miss" it. But I will admit, I do envy people with finished basements. I guess it really depends on the size of the house though?

It is true of all houses built by Levit, which is true of about 95% of the town. There are a few homes built later, scattered in, but hard to find. I believe the mlsli has a basement search option, if you're so inclined.
