Was this meetup group ever formed?? I would love a group like this. I've been having alot of problems finding a good program for my son. He is so bored in school & I really can't afford most of the private schools.
Do you think gifted children could calculate the proper change, without using the cash register, when they get their first job at Akbar's Deli and Falafel shoppe?
This thread and its seething anti-intellectualism vindicates the OP, if nothing else.
"Gifted" kids often are independent and will pursue their interests and let the world be damned. However, it soon becomes apparent how isolating that is when the other kids are more interested in beating each other up or gossiping.
It's important that these kids find others like them or else they're damned to constant loneliness. Ultimately, finding such interesting people must go on for the rest of their lives.
I know this because I have lived this since I was a child.
Please let me know if you still have your group. I would love to join. To the other comments, my gifted child does not do flash cards and enjoys playing in the mud. I do not force her to buy anatomy books at the bookstore; she picks them out herself. Not all parents of gifted children are evil. We are just as amazed as you are when you hear our children speak. And in closing, I don't care what my daughter does for a living when she grows up as long as she is happy and most importantly, healthy.
i love it to. my boys are in gifted classes and while they play sports, it would be nice for them to be around children who love art, music and learning in general.
One of the problems is in the term "gifted". This term often results in the parents being ego-driven and/or creates concious or subconcious resentment on the part of others. The fact is, they just fall on one side of the bell curve. Just as we no longer use the label "retarded" I don't think that we should use the term "gifted". All children who fall outside the average should simply be referred to as "special needs children" regardless of if they are the low side or the high side. There is no need to identify for the world which ones have low IQs and which have high IQs.
I think we should continue to use both retarded and gifted, too much grey area when you try not to offend anyone.
