I couldn't agree more.

Hey Cali, I've learned over the years that different people have vastly different perspectives about dogs than you or I have. I grew up with dogs being highly respected and basically treated like family. A lot of people don't share that perspective. Some people (e.g. my neighbors) see dogs simply as animals, not human, and therefore feel responsible only for their most basic needs. And it appears that their most basic needs are being met since they are alive and animal control didn't feel there was any abuse. If you're an animal lover, it's hard to watch. But good luck trying to change someone's values regarding dogs or animals in general.

A question no one has ever answered for me....

Why buy a dog if you aren't going to treat him or her like a member of the family? They are expensive. They require your time and attention. Food and vet care aren't cheap. Makes no sense to me.

Mine don't care where we are or what we're doing. They just want to be there and included. And of course if there's people food involved, even better.

That's always been my question too Yellowsnow. Some people are just too stupid to own a dog. I guess if the dogs in question have been living that way for seven years it hasn't hurt them, but is cruel. IMO dogs are people too. I guess we shouldn't forget that DOG is a mirror reflection of GOD.

Default Sad Reality

Unfortunately it could be possible the neighbor wants the animals to parish. Appealing to this persons character may give you an opportunity to see why she has the dogs to begin with. Maybe a divorce and she/he got the house and dogs...are their kids? Based on some of the answers you received you can see that alot of persons just do not precieve the value a family pet has to offer, it is just a dumb animal. I would contact your person at the newspaper, also a local vet may be able to give you some suggestions. The reality is there are thousands of animals that are in shelters without loving families or in peoples back yards 24/7 hidden away from caring eyes..why do they bother to have one. I admire you standing up for what is right..

The two dogs are large breeds. Both about 7 years old. Outside 24 hours a day. I called animal control and they did a well check. According to Las Vegas Animal Control: The dogs have a kids' doll house they can get into for shade.

Seriously.

Please let me know what I should do! These dogs look miserable. Just plain miserable.

** Another note on these poor pups: They DO NOT have pads to sleep on. They sleep on ROCKS. The doll house is tiny. There is no way they could fit into it together and on top of that it's plastic!!!
And they are still alive?

my dog sleeps under the blankets on her back. I do not put her on her back.. she just prefers it. Sometimes I wake up to her gasping for air.
