When it comes to real expensive food I just ask myself how much is toilet paper? Man's got to know his limitations.

In terms of food cost it goes like this: casual dining (chain restaurant), prison food, university/retirement food, cheap buffet food, dog food. Prisons and universities don't have to make a profit on food. Casino buffets do. Even the worst buffet in town is running in the black. Consider that if you are ever unfortunate enough to eat at Joker's Wild or Arizona Charlie's.

The cheap buffets are using tons of oil and salt. The mantra of these places is, "Salt it like you ain't eatin' it."

Actually, yes, early in my career, I had contact with one of the state prison systems in procuring food. All products were procured at the lowest bid pricing with little or no adherence to the state's specifications. The cost of the food was 20-30% less than reputable vendors like Sysco or Kraft but it was nearly impossible to produce edible food, not that anyone really cared. It was significantly worse than USDA food, and that is difficult.

I could NOT believe that there was a Hash House at the M Casino as the hotel was so low-volume when I was last there.

It is a great property .... that no one seems to stay at.

Yes. In many prison across America the ingredients used to feed inmates are clearly stamped, "Not fit for human consumption". People need to know what they are talking about before put their feet in their mouths. Now for the topic. I thought In & Out was boring. I will take Steak and Shake any day

The other problem is what the state procures for its prisons is often used in the state hospitals and other state feeding sites.

Generally, I like Steak and Shake and Culver's burgers a lot. HOWEVER, my two best burgers in 2013 where both at Whataburger.

The first was a double patty melt with grilled onions and cheese. I thought it was the best hamburger that I had ... an it was for two months.

Two weeks ago, I was at a Whataburger in New Mexico and ordered the same with roasted green chilis. That was phenomenal.

I used to be a real in & Out fan. However, I am wondering how much of that was the hamburger and how much of it was the "Coors affect." That is, we give a lot of credit to those places that we cannot go to everyday.

The In & Out desire is definitely a Coors-type thing. People crave the experience and the memories more than anything. Before they expanded outside So Cal everyone who wanted the burger had the memory of either living or visiting So Cal so the burger became that as much as the taste itself. Its amazing even to this day how much its a So Cal thing, you don't see locations nearly as packed during off hours as you do where it started. The one in Mission Valley in San Diego for example is a zoo at 10pm on a Tuesday night. Go to most Las Vegas locations at the same time and lets just say you'll have a good choice of tables. The only one which is usually crowded is the one across from the Strip and half the people eating there seem to be visiting from So Cal.

So true about the experience and memories. I remember 6 or 7 years ago, long before I moved here, renting a car for our stay for the sole purpose of going to In 'n Out on Trop. Seems silly now. We've been living here for 7 months and have been twice. Both times were to take visitors.

When I worked in Irvine years ago, we would eat at In & Out 2x per week, despite the 15 minute waits.

We went on the last visit to Las Vegas and my reaction was "nice burger, but nothing memorable". Certainly, it beats McDonalds or Burger king but you can certainly do better at the same price.

I guess my question is to the OP on this thread. How was Fat Burger? I have seen them around and always wondered how the burgers are there?

I think In-And-Out is a big rip off for what you get and it amazes me that people still line up for this place. I guess people are brainwashed (including my kids) and just follow the pack.

I have always liked Fudruckers for burgers as far as restaurants go. Normally I buy my own and make my own.
They have stores in Ca where you can buy fresh ground sirloin. Not the grocery chains since most of sirloin or ground beef comes in a tube from a warehouse. Yes even the stuff they put on display that looks fresh.

So I'm still looking for someplace in Las Vegas where I can get fresh ground sirloin or ground beef.
