My friend and I are thinking of moving to Las Vegas soon, and are just looking for some tips on the best way to do this. We are both looking for jobs currently and would like to have something lined up beforehand. We are moving from Michigan, so neither of us is comfortable with moving across the country with no prospective income.

My friend is a teacher and is looking for something in education, as well as serving part time on weekends. I have been working in administration and hospitality for about 6 years and would like to find something within those fields. We both have been hearing mixed things about the difficulties of finding employment in Las Vegas, and would appreciate any advice you could give. Are there jobs to be found in Las Vegas?

The other major thing we are interested in finding out about is housing. I have done some research, and it seems like there is quite a bit of housing available. We are looking for an apartment, for 6 months to start out with, and in at least a relatively safe neighborhood. Any suggestions on where to look? Reading threads on here makes it sound like it is almost impossible to find apartments in Las Vegas without giving a blood sample, is this accurate?

I have been reading threads on this site for a bit now, and so I have definitely heard a lot of negative things about moving to Las Vegas, and a lot of positive things also. I would appreciate any advice that would make this move a little easier. Thanks!

Ask some detailed questions -- something more specific than "Are there jobs in Las Vegas."

If you go through the links, you will learn that your questions have been asked and answered many times before.

How much money are you bringing?? That is what matters.

Sorry, I just saw this message. I am trying to calculate how much we should bring with us. I think that both of us will be bringing around 2500 with us in savings. We are both hoping to have jobs, but it seems that it is a much harder feat then we both originally thought. Is this a reasonable amount to start? Do you have any suggestions on finding jobs before arriving in las vegas? Any information would be helpful! Thanks!

housing. if you find a prospective address, sign up and run it through alertid. find out what's going on "around" the location.

if you can visit before you commit, check out the address yourself. drive out in an ever increasing circle and check out the neighborhood for yourself. you'll see or not see any graffiti, your new neighbors - do this with your windows down (i know it's hot) so you can hear too. do this on weekdays and a weekend. you'll see or hear any red flags. visit local establishments and talk to them about the area. i went to the local pd and spoke with an officer one saturday and he was looking to buy exactly where i was looking to buy. he gave me the low down on schools, crime, etc. hit serveal places.

jobs. sign up for careerbuilder.com.

Thanks f.2! The information is helpful. My friend will be visiting the first week in august and she is going to look around for potential apartments.

I am signed up for careerbuilder, indeed, hcareers, and of course have been looking on craigslist and other sites as well. Most places want you to have a local address, which we obviously do not have yet. Any suggestions around this? Thanks again!

I doubt you're going to get a decent serving gig for just weekends.you gotta pay your dues.
If you serve part time they're not gonna give you a cherry shift. Most endure the weekdays to get to work the money shifts.

$2,500 isn't enough unless you come here WITH a job.

Most decent apartments are going to at least want a letter of hire before letting you lease.

The hiring process at casinos is a long one....

What type of hospitality? Do you realize that the BIG hotel in most cities is a small off strip hotel here?

These hotels are among the biggest in the world...last I saw 19 of the 25 largest are here.

We're talking 2-5,000 rooms.

It's definitely doable but risky with so little money and no job lined up.
