I know several people (not on this board) who have moved to Las Vegas in the last year or so and are unable to find jobs. One moved there last October and is still looking. One gave up and moved back. That seems to be a scary fact of life there.

If you can do a Hilton transfer that would be the best thing to do IMHO.

If your friend gets a school district job full time and you transfer then you're both set.

If you just come out here with 5k then you're taking a big risk. Your OP sounded like that's what you were planning.

This is a good place to work and live but its also a good place to lose all your money and get beaten down. There are plenty of people around to help you in whichever direction you're predisposed of going.

If you drink, gamble or party too much this place will break you...either of those tendencies or in spirit.

In my original post, I expressed that neither of us was comfortable with moving across the country without some form of prospective income. My only concern was that I had been reading that it was almost impossible to find jobs without a local address, which we obviously do not have yet. Hopefully she will get a teaching job, and the same with my transfer, but I just was trying to get some additional information in case either or both of these options do not pan out. Thanks everyone for the feedback, please, keep it coming!

Jobs are there. It just depends on if you're willing to take them. If someone has been here for a year and not found a job, it means they haven't found a job that they would accept. But doing a quick search (all of the Help Wanted signs in storefronts, etc. excluded), you will find there are many. Personally, I would not take them either, as I need more than $8-$10/hour to live. I just think it's erroneous to hear that people "can't find a job". That's crap. They can find a job, they just don't want to do THAT job.

^^^^ exactly! And that's why I took two security jobs here...so it could buy me time to find something else.

I'm not above doing what I gotta do to get where I wanna go...legally that is.

Security served its purpose so is canning soon onto the next stage and then hopefully back in business after that! ...No partners this time...I'll finance it myself.

Tough lesson!

I know quite a few who have returned from moving to Vegas with their tails between their legs.

Not being able to find work has never been the cause.

Question for the locals.
Can a person live on 10 an hours or so ?

Well fortunately my friends that has been looking since last Oct has money to live on but I would NOT be able to survive on $8-10 an hour. Work 2 jobs like that, maybe? No. Having some free time to enjoy my new city is priority regardless of where I go. So yeah, I'll be picky.

I get job search emailed to me. 25 jobs a day in a couple of cities, Las Vegas being one of them. If the 25 maybe 2 are in LV. Not good odds of being hired

If someone is having trouble finding their desired work/career out here in Vegas they will either have to take a $10 an hour job or go back to where they came from.

Here more so than most larger cities but it Ain't pretty!

I'm a single guy and don't go out, my monthly expenses are about $1,600.

$1,600 is what you'd gross at $10/hr 40/hr week....so no, it would not be fun!

I do make more than the minimum monthly car payment though...If your car is paid off then you could live for less.

Just remember, this place is kind of seasonal....any job that services the tourists will drop hours and tips for the off season.

So take that into account.

Cocktail girls at the pools start coming back to the other clubs/casinos....they are the top girls usually so they are gonna push everyone else down a notch or two.
They literally have to audition for those pool jobs each summer.

If you're willing to work and do what you gotta do you can make it here...but if you believe there are jobs that are beneath you then stay put...you're not ready to risk your survival. Or come here with substantial savings!
