Because of my background in hospitality, I am fully aware that the hotels on the strip are among some of the largest hotels in the world, and I am prepared to "pay my dues" by working at a smaller hotel off the strip to start with. As far as the amount of money, my friend and I will be sharing expenses, and we will both be bringing at least 2500 to get us started. We are planning on starting at an extended stay hotel, yes i know this may not be the ideal situation, however, since I have seen that most leasing companies want you to have proof of income, we are prepared to have to nail down solid jobs before finding a place to lease. With the fact that there are two of us to split costs, and that we are under the understanding that we will have to work our way up in the service industry, as is usually the case, can anyone tell me honestly if we are crazy to think we can make this happen? Thanks!

2500? Multiply that by 4.

Maybe I am wrong, but if I multiplied that by four, then doubled it because there are two of us, that would mean we would need $20,000 just to start off? I find that very hard to believe. forgive me if i sound rude, but i just think that seems excessive. I have already been called back by a few of the jobs i have applied for, and we both have many years of experience in the service industry. my question is this, is it so hard to find a job that we need $20 grand to start out?

You will need 6 months living expenses! Jobs aren't that easy especially if you are not a local.

Can I get a few more people to input on this subject? Does it really take 6 months to get a job? Airics, it isnt that I dont believe you, it just never hurts to have more opinions...

I can't comment on getting a job here, as I brought mine with me. My 20 y.o. stepdaughter was offered a job in the first 2 weeks she was here as a hostess at Applebee's, so there are jobs there, it just depends on what you're willing and able to do. Regarding $2500, that won't get you far. Take your rent, and triple it, and that is about standard for move-ins here.

Thank you for the information! Together with my friend, we will have probably around 5000 for start up costs.

Read the stories of others on this forum. There are a couple of recent job threads for Vegas.

For some, it takes them a couple of months, others it takes them a couple of weeks. If you are very attractive or willing to perform "special favors", you may be able to get hired within hours.

+100

Never COUNT on being the exception!

My story was an exception, except that I prepped for months before moving.
I looked at what jobs required and found one type(security) that I could get the credentials from my home state...the process took about 3 months. Once I got the credentials I applied and was able to set up TWO interviews for the same day, both part time jobs. I drove 15 hours, made the interviews, Got conditional letters of hire....conditioned on me actually MOVING here as so many don't apparently.
After the interviews I went to an apartment complex that was under the same management company as the one I had at home. They transferred my lease with no deposit except $600 non-refundable pet fee.

I had TWO part-time jobs and an apartment waiting for me when I showed up.

I would recommend this method for anyone moving anywhere sans a job transfer.

You indicated willingness to work part time but initially said serving only on weekends.....My take is no matter where it is, no one will allow you to work just weekends in a tipped job. Weekends are the shifts everyone wants....you'll have to pay your dues by working the much slower weekdays first.

If you're willing to do that then you could do this.

The only hitch I see is that working one job gets in the way of getting a casino job because the casinos expect you to jump though many hoops at their whim before hiring you...it can take months. Your employer might not be flexible enough to do that.

The other thing is HERE having two friends split an apartment is a MINUS not a PLUS....trust me.

I agree with others that you are risking it with so little money...it's better to be safe than sorry!

I myself am moving again. I was planning on moving by last May to an area begging for the kind of work I'm going for. The people I've spoke to have said I'd have a job within two days, yet I decided to delay that for an additional six months so I could save an additional $6,000....so I will be leaving with just under 12k....it's just me and a couple of cats. After my schooling is finished and I have my credentials I will drive out there and apply for jobs, get an apartment then come back and move! Same thing, same way!

Do you BOTH have a car or are you sharing one or worse?

Have you lived with your friend before? Your ordeal will be stressful....neither of you will be at your best!

I hate to do this, but I'd recommend Harbor Island but only if you can get a suite in front...DO NOT STAY IN BACK!
They charge $149/week and are really close to the strip and the Hard Rock.

I hope you're street smart....I've heard too many stories of guys here trying to turn out new girls....I even helped two girls that some guys were trying to forcibly pull into their car...I pulled up just after a local couple chased the car away...this was at a BUS stop in broad daylight just off the strip at Flamingo and Koval. Right in front of a 7/11.

Good Luck!

BTW what are your ages, looks and weight like? It's going to make ALL the difference in the world for service jobs here more so than other places.

If you are amazed at the trolls that have these jobs in the casinos just know they probably didn't start out looking like that...and one word how they kept the job...UNION.

Cyborgt800, thank you for the information. In regards to working only weekends, my friend is being interviewed for jobs in the school districts just outside of las vegas, and I only meant that she would look for additional work for evenings and weekends, if she has a job within the school district. I am not looking for serving positions, but more for positions in the hotels. I currently work for a Hilton property in Michigan and am looking at transfers. I have already had interest expressed for positions working front desk for a couple of Hilton properties near the strip. We have both been researching the area for several months, and this is something that I have been thinking about for a couple of years, pretty much since I started working in the hospitality industry. I started this thread to get some additional information, but believe me, this is not the only research I have done. I realize there is no way for anyone to predict length of time to find a job, or difficulty in finding a place to live, but I am looking for opinions and previous experience to help with our planning. Anyone else want to tell me about their experiences?
