Resort fees are smart business and they are beginning to catch on outside of Vegas. I think they will eventually be the norm instead of the exception in destination locations if not everywhere.

I hope the OP enjoyed Cancun. I was there recently and thoroughly enjoyed it, but it is a totally different vacation experience than LV. I couldn't say a resort fee would make the difference in choosing one place over another. If you enjoy the non-itemized pricing strategy of an all-inclusive versus the one spelled out for you that is your choice but it is really just a personal marketing bias of the purchaser. One requires an extra step of math but they are both charging you for things you may or may not take advantage of.

I may be wrong but I think a lot of the big hotels on the strip have offered resort credits for a while. They're practically a win-win for the casinos because it keeps you from wondering off and you'll be more likely to spend more money and if you don't use the credit, it's just money in their pocket. It's the same reason you get $10 of free play or whatever for signing up for their slot club. After that free $10, you're very likely to continue spending money in their casino.

I passed a service station the other day that had a sign "Oil Change Special $25". Then in VERY small print it said "Plus oil and shop fee".

Wtf? What is the $25 for?

I've stopped checking baggage (carry on) so I don't get charged. I used to check.

You can't avoid the resort fees. The FTC should force the hotels to include any mandatory, non-third party fees in the base rate, because it functionally is. Calling part of it a resort fee is just a fiddle to keep the base rate lower on internet price listings.

This whole thing reminds me of when the no smoking bans were taking effect. People said it would kill all of the nightclubs...didn't happen.

They said Obamacare was going to give everyone free heath care.....ain't happening!

When will people learn? .....won't happen!

We have been coming to Las Vegas for over thirty years. We pay less today for air, room and car rental, not even including inflation, than we did in the eighties. Back then we came once every couple of years. Now we come two or three times a year. When you compare similar vacations, and try to compare them as fairly as possible, we think that Las Vegas is just about the best deal going , even with the room fees.

Do we like paying them? No. Are we getting good value for our travel dollars? Yes, absolutely.

That's the owner's profit for changing your oil. Then there's the oil and the fee for the greasemonkey. The garage I go to charges $15 plus oil, no shop fee. I am incapable of changing my own oil anymore -- I'd need to be triple-jointed just to GET at the filter.

$15? Is this recycled oil? Does this include your filter also?

A friend of mine says he found a shop on Boulder hwy that charges $18. This includes recycled oil and a generic brand filter.(American vehicles, 90s foreign vehicles-non diesel only)

No, I buy a filter and the oil, and they change it for me for $15. Worth every penny. Like I said, I cannot even reach the filter anymore.

I hear ya, filter placements are getting more and more complicated. Even worse is when car manufactures require you to purchase an $80 "special tool" to remove a filter.(Audi)
