So we've decided to make a trip down to our condo (S.Nellis by Albertsons) in July and again in October and decided to use taxis (and busses when feasible) as renting a car is just too expensive for the amount we'd use it for one and two week periods.

I have heard some pretty bad wait stories for taxis for locals (or for anybody off the Strip or other off-strip casinos). I thought I'd check today and phone from Canada to investigate. My first call was to Nellis Taxis (closest or so I thought) and asked them how long of a wait it would be for a cab from our condo address if we wanted to go to the Strip. Well, surprise, he said even though they were called Nellis Cabs they do their business on the Strip and area and he gave me a number for a company called ANorth Cab Co. and didn't generally serve locals. Can anybody who lives down there save me any time and give me some tips. Thanks.

I would try Whittlesea blue Cab and/or Henderson Cab [Same company] but it is difficult to get a local cab anytime here.....new companies form say "WE want to fill the need for LOCAL cabs]" then when they get the Medallion you never hear from em again cause they're out on the strip...... good luck....IF you do find one that comes out....try using that same driver again and tip well....

You can rent a car for $8 a day. Is that really more expensive than a cab? I think using a cab for things like going to get groceries would be a real hassel.

I thought there was always the insurance and extras that bumped these rental cars up to $20 a day from the advertised $8 to $10 a day ...at least thats what a friend told me who rented a car for a week. What companies are "straight up" with their rental rates? Thanks.

You are correct.

If I have the doorman call a cab to my condo it's a 1/2 to 1 hour wait. It's much easier to walk to the hotel/casino next door where a cab is always waiting 24/7.

When I first moved here, I tried to make an appointment for a cab to come to my house early the next morning to take me to the airport. I was told that you couldn't make advanced appointments and that I would need to call in the morning when I was ready to depart. Not willing to risk missing my flight due to a late-arriving cab or a complete no show, I decided to call a limo company instead. When I subsequently returned to LV, I took a cab home from the airport and found that the costs were similiar. Consequently, I have used a limo service exclusively since then.

And to get back to the OP, although I seriously doubt someone could actually rent a car for a total daily price of $8 including fees (not to mention gas), I can't imagine that taking cabs in this city could be cheaper than renting a car for the days one needs a ride somewhere.

Do an Orbitz search for car rentals. They are quite cheap, depending on which day of the week you book. I have seen them for as low as $8 a day (seems the cheapest today is $14). They ask you to add optional insurance, but you can decline those. Any other fees listed are based on certain driver's restrictions (age, etc). That cost includes unlimited miles. Yes, you have to pay for gas. All taxes and fees are included in their rates.

My worry too is getting a DUI charge on top of that if we rent a car and get stopped. It is almost zero tolerance up here in Canada so we always take taxis if we drink. When we're in Vegas we always drink at the casinos/lounges...not drunk at all but all it takes is one or two or a glass or two of wine with dinner to get a charge doesn't it? Also, where we live there are no stop signs or lights or traffic and even in our town 35 min away only has two stop lights....It's probably really expensive if you dent or damage the rental cars even a bit and seriously, I think I'd have to pay a shrink for the post-traumatic stress disorder I'd have driving in LV.

So I did some quotes online with LV car rentals and these are additional charges (not including the optional damage insurance) for a two-week period. I won't mention which company this is, but they all seem about the same. ($610 total= $43 a day+ gas).
Consolidated Facility Chg 3.75/day $52.50
Concession Recovery Fee 10 Pct $42.61
Clark County Tax 2 Pct $7.86
Vehicle License Fee 2.35/day $32.90
Sales Tax (8.10%) $31.85
Nv Gov Surchg (10.0%) $48.83
