Yeah it sucks if you're not on the strip, but look from a cabbies perspective.

Local= Drive empty for 2-10 miles for a ten dollar fare and a two dollar tip then drive empty back to the strip.

Strip= Drive a tourist a few blocks for a ten dollar fare and a 3-5 dollar tip then pick up another tourist same location...lather, rinse, repeat!

Don't get me wrong though, when I drive a local home from a club and they tip well, they get my personal cell number, they can call me direct for repeat rides.
From the RIO to Decauter is a $10 fare, your numbers are skewed.

The one thing that I do NOT understand about LV Cabs is the HIGH Fares ($2.00 a min)
my therapist charges $2.00 a minute, and she is not talking to someone on her Bluetooth the whole time I am in her office.

the waiting time was instituted because people would go from joint to joint paying off their markers and the cab would sit idle...they;d be inside for 15 minutes the go to the next joint inside for 15 minutes then the next one inside 15 minutes...your now gone less then a mile and used as much as 60 minutes of the drivers time.....the wait time ONLY kicks in on the meter when the cab is at a standstill for [IIRC] 2-3 minutes....it will up your fare in heavy traffic or in the above example....

Thats why [for example] a cab may elect to go from Caesers to whatever they call the Hilton now, and he will go down Flamingo to paradise rather then go down the strip.....strip much shorter in miles....paradise much shorter in time....

I don't think Macgeek is talking about waiting time; especially given that it is "only" $30/hr. not $2/min. I think he is bitching about taking a 5 minute trip and it costing ten bucks (or something like that).

I start my new job on Monday and have been told to not even bother showing up at the office here in Vegas but rather get my butt on a plane to Reno to begin working on a project. OK, no problem I say and my boss books me a flight and hotel and says take a cab to the airport and expense it back when I can.

So yesterday I called Henderson Cab (or whatever they are called) and I am told that the fare would be $60 from my home in Madeira Canyon to the Airport. Assuming the same for a trip home when I return I am stunned. $120 (before tip) for a 30 mile round trip.

I e-mailed my boss and told him I would pay the $14/day long term parking at the airport and expense that instead. I am sure I could hire a limo for less than $60 each way.

So I'm assuming that next time we take the free shuttle from the Strip (Harrah's) to Sam's Town that any cab at Sam's Town can take us to our condo about 10 minutes up Nellis or are some restricted to hotel/casinos only? I'm pretty sure I saw a Henderson company taxi driving around our gated complex when we were down there a week ago.

I've been reading most of this and just thought I'd chime in.

I drive for a west side only cab co, I can tell you these are some hard working guys. As a matter of fact some of the best radio people I've had the pleasure to work.

What it all comes down to is tips, I really don't care if your going a block or 100 miles.

The way things work out the company takes most of the fare, it's how you tip us that makes our day.

Trust me I know there's a lot of bad drivers, but there's a bunch of us that like to be proffesional and we do our jobs with pride and safety first.

I take a 75% of my day from the radio, unlike a strip cab that can go hotel to hotel.

When I take the call, find your address drive to you, knock on the door,wait...open and close doors for you like a limo driver. Always smile and keep a good attitude, then at the end of the ride you tip me a dime. Chances are you will never see me again. Drivers share this information with each other.

If you toss a five spot chances are I will give you my card or number for repeat Buisness.

I'll I'm saying is take care of your cabbie and he will take care of you.

Forgot to mention the discount coupons, that is the Senior Ride Program. They get coupons for 50 cents on the dollar. Basically they get books of 20-$1.00 cab vouchers for 10 bucks. Making there cab rides 1/2 price.

I don't have the number handy but a call to the taxi cab authority will get you the referral.

Great way for our seniors to get around.

I can't remember if I got a card from my cabbie here in LV. I tend to over-tip because I've been in the tip business. In Jamaica, I always got a card. In Vegas, five bucks you give to the pizza guy. Minimum ten tip for a cabbie if he / she drove out to your local spot.

I agree NLVGal, I would tip $10 to have somebody pick me up at home abut 15 mins from the Strip without having to wait an hour. Cheaper than getting heat stroke waiting for a bus and the hospital bill....:-)
