Hi, I will be staying at MGM Signature for 3 months (Jan-Mar. 2012). Was hoping to do a little shopping and cooking during my stay and was looking for recommendations on good grocery stores nearby. I will have vehicle but still don't want to travel far.

Thanks

International Marketplace - Tropicana and Decatur. If you're a foodie, this is your 1st stop. Then Market 168 at Jones and Spring Market and also Jones Market in the same place.

The Whole Foods on LV Blvd is OK -- same as every other Whole Foods.

If you're looking for "normal" grocery stores -- Smith's, Von's, Albertson's, Food 4 Less, etc., there are plenty of them on Maryland Pkwy.

Closest Mexican market is the "Marketon" (formerly King Ranch) on D.I. (in the Pecos area, I think). I prefer El Super at Charleston and Lamb or Liborio at Washington and Lamb.

A more in-depth listing can be found here.

Actually, that location of Whole Foods has more products that we like than the other locations and we drive clear across the valley to go there when we run out of things.

Agreed. Toss in a couple of Trader Joes locations and that is all the shopping that I do in Las Vegas.

Then you're missing out -- the Mexican and Asian markets have great stuff at amazing prices.

I routinely get 10 pounds of potatoes for $1, or 5 pounds of onions for $1. Cilantro and limes are 1/4 the price of the "white" grocery stores. Live fish in tanks at the Asian markets, including the least expensive lobster in town. Amazing bread, butter and chocolates at the Russian market on Jones.

When you get those potatoes that cheap, are they all in good condition? No rotting, not full of eyes, can last more than a week? And where do you buy them that cheap? Tired of paying $3 for a 5 lb bag.

They're basic Idaho russets. Same the white-bread stores sell $3/5lb. Find a Mexican market where you're the only person who speaks English, and head to the produce section. El Super at Lamb and Charleston is a pretty good market. Note -- they only do $1/10lb once a month or so. Check the flyers. (If you get them where you live. I live on the East side, so most of my grocery flyers are in Spanish.)

Make sure to add some Asian markets to your rotation, as well as Gilcrease Orchard and Bountiful Baskets.

Also -- the chickens at the Mexican markets are 100% better quality than the white-bread markets, and 25% cheaper. Beautiful yellow skin, and shaped like a chicken, not some mutant breast beast with broken legs like you get at the white-bread markets.

One of the butchers gave me the low-down --

"In Me-hee-ko, the pollos, they eat corn. In A-mare-EE-kah, the pollos, they eat drogas."

EDIT: As I posted earlier, This Link has in depth market info for Las Vegas. I'm a classically-trained cook, after all. Since I can't use my employer's commercial accounts to get groceries, I shop around. A lot.

Thanks ScoopLV for the link. I'm sure it will be very helpful. Can't wait to take my first culinary shopping trip in LV.
