In what price range? That might help people suggest areas for you.

We're looking to rent a house in the price range of $900 to $1000 a month in a safe, quiet neighborhood.

I've been reading the posts on Las Cruces and some people make it sound like it's a gang infested, crime ridden area. Can some one who has lived there for a few years please give me their honest opinion of Las Cruces and what neighborhoods to avoid living in. Thank you.

LC is not crime infested. There is some gang activity as in many cities its size. I suggest you avoid the far east mesa. You will recognize it when you get there, substandard housing, dirt roads, manufactured homes, no sidewalks. There are bargain prices on homes in that area, but you get what you pay for.

What is Sonoma Ranch and the subdivisions near it -- what area -- high range or something, or is that the east mesa? Sonoma Ranch is ok, right?

What middle and high school do the kids in that area go to? I know it's Desert Hills elementary, which is supposed to be quite good.

Those are on the east mesa, but far, far different than the "east mesa' neighborhoods being referred to as a punk haven. They're good neighborhoods.
sorry I can't help you with the schools though.

If you're talking to a good Real Estate agent, lawmom, they should be able to give you good info on the character and location of neighborhoods you should be looking at. R-E people are falling all over themselves to get and keep potential clients, so use that if you haven't already. If they're NOT being very helpful maybe find another agent, a full time successful pro with a top sales record. There are a lot of hobbyist/newbie R-E agents around. When I was looking, I asked what their past three years of sales were like and how they ranked in the company and what the price ranges were.

To paraphrase philosopher Elbert Hubbard: When you need to get something done, ask a busy person.....the other kind has no time.

Thanks.

We have been just hooked up with a realtor from Steinborn, and will speak with her about these questions. We'd be looking at August to move, so we have a little time to figure things out.

High Range is just below Sonoma Ranch. It is a somewhat older development, dating, I believe, from the mid-1980s.
There are also developments called 'The Missions', 'Cimarron Hill' and a couple of others, all along Roadrunner Pky and continuing sort of northeasterly towards the mountains behind High Range.

Kids who live along the Roadrunner Pky corridor go to Camino Real Middle School on Roadrunner Pky and are zoned for Onate HS, which is off of 70 on Mesa Grande, but, kids can go 'out of district' to one of the other high schools, if another school offers something that isn't offered at Onate.
