Publix is a great store to shop at. Most of the locations are like the new Kroger. Great Deli, good quality "store brand" items, and clean stores.

Amen! When i went back to Florida to the in-laws for Thanksgiving, they had opened a new Publix at the entrance to their sub-division. I went in and got a sub and a slice of b-day cake the day after Thanksgiving... leftovers are great, but i was craving a Publix cuban sandwhich and cake!

Oh how I love a good Cuban sandwich! However, the Publix I went to in Homosassa Springs FL didn't put salami on theirs. In Tampa at least, a real Cuban sandwich just isn't a Cuban sandwich without salami.

At any rate, to kind of merge this with another thread, my mother told me today that she stocks up on powdered saffron at Publix in Florida when she goes back down there for visits. It would be great if Publix up here would carry things like that (as well as real Cuban bread, key lime pies, guava jelly, dried chorizzo, among others).

But maybe I'm putting the cart before the horse. First we need to get Publix to come up here!

This will be nearly perfect timing! I shop at a Publix that's 3 blocks away from me here in Tampa, and I'm moving to the Halls area next year!

For a great Cuban sandwich, its hard to beat Havana Village on Dale Mabry Hwy. in Tampa! The Cuban food is about all I'll miss of Florida.

We have a really good Cuban restaurant in Knoxville, but their Cuban sandwiches are also the fake kind without salami. The owner is a Cuban guy from Miami so maybe in Miami they don't use salami, I don't know. Anyway, it's not as convenient as finding Cuban food in Tampa but it's certainly a great place to go for a special occasion. Their desserts are fabulous! I just wish they had real, Tampa style Cuban deviled crabs.

I used to eat there once a week! I worked in Hyde Park.. that was a short 5 minute drive. Great Cubans and really cheap too!

There is a very good Cuban restraunt in downtown Knoxville.. it's on Gay street.. can't recall the name of it. But, the food is pretty authentic.

I uses to eat at Cafe Con Trey, they were on Kennedy, down near Armenia.. they closed last year..

Yes, my fiance's parents live in Brooksville, just north of Weeki Wachi.. they got a brand new Publix a few months ago, i guess..

Maybe i am spoiled, my parents have a huge Key Lime tree in their backyard... I am seeing them for Christmas, maybe they will bring me some and i might make a quick and easy Key Lime Pie...

Yeah, sorry JMT. Cuban sandwiches do not traditionally have salami. Sounds like a good tweak to the recipe, though!

Actually, they do. Cuban sandwiches first appeared in Tampa/Ybor City in 1900. They didn't appear in Miami until 1960. In Tampa Cuban sandwiches have Genoa salami. In Miami, they don't. In Miami they also add lettuce and tomatoes which in Tampa is considered an atrocity.

My parents were born in Tampa in the early 1930s and have been eating Cuban sandwiches ever since. Their parents ate Cuban sandwiches even earlier. They always had salami and were never, never pressed (although I do like mine pressed).

Didn't know that. Being from Miami, you'll have to forgive my mistake.
