TG&Y actually stood for Tomlinson, Gosselin & Young, for the three men who founded the chain.

As we determined back in February of this year, William McCoy and William McCoy were the grandfather-grandson mayors of Independence elected in 1849 and 1920 respectively.

What brothers served as mayors of Independence?

Brothers Roger T Sermon, mayor from 1924-1950, and William Sermon, mayor from 1958-1961 (resigned from office).

There could easily have been father-son mayors in tandem.

The son, whose election would have been a 99.999 % given, declined to run.

Who was the son who so graciously declined to be mayor?

Who ran in place of the son and became mayor in his stead?

The father, Roger T. Sermon, was in his 26th year as mayor and had announced he was ready to run for another four years but died in office in 1950.

His son, Roger T. Sermon, Jr., declined to run although he was urged by the Eastern Jackson County Democrat machine to be the Democrat candidate. No one ran as a Democrat unless they had machine endorsement. When they got that endorsement, they were 99.999% guaranteed being elected. The machine even had city workers actively door to door campaigning and dropping Democrat flyers off at every house in the city while on city work time. (This sort of thing was put to a stop when the Good Government League swept the city offices in the early sixties.)

Robert P. Weatherford ran as the Democrat in 1950, instead, and handily won—giving way to Roger T. Sermon’s brother, William Sermon in 1958.

Maybe this was Independence’s “Bush” dynasty?

Robert P. Weatherford was mayor when I visited his office around 1954. This was at the old city hall at Kansas and Main. His secretary was very nice and smiling and told me to walk on in to his office. He was wearing a sharp suit and tie but his feet were propped upon his desk; he was leaning dangerously back in his wooden swivel chair, he was smoking a huge cigar, and reading something held up in front of his face. Smoke filled the room and he barely acknowledged my companion and me and went on about reading. We took a circular from a bookcase and immediately left laughing all the way, because we had just seen our first stereotypical politician.

East College to the North, Truman to the south, Noland in the middle. Dodgion or Hocker on the east, Liberty on the west.
