I dug a bit deeper in my collection. This is an ad from 1916. They apparently dabbled in everything that would sell!

It failed at the polls in Independence in 1888.

It would have changed many people’s lives.

It failed at the polls in Independence again in 1892.

It failed at the polls in Independence again in 1907.

But in 1914 it won at the polls not only in Independence but also in Jackson County to be effective in January 2015.

What did Independence and Jackson County become as a result?

It is "viewable", and now I know now where it is actually located. Thank you.

The vote in Jackson County was only by and for the unincorporated areas.

In the cities of Jackson County, the voters of each municipality decided for itself at its own pace or not at all if the citizens did not want or care to address the matter.

Independence and Jackson County may have been the vanguard areas in the state to approve becoming it at the polls. But eventually half the state, county by county, approved the measure.

Attempts to convince the electorate to adopt it on a statewide basis for the entire state failed at the polls in 1910, 1912, and 1918.

But, then one day it became effective in the entire state with no local or statewide vote at all.

What did Independence become in January 1915 as a result of the citizen's vote in 1914?

The answer is as simple as being three letters long.

Today, it is not effective and it was not effective when I was a kid in the forties and fifties.

I'm wondering if the "sporting goods division" was sold to Lee's. Both establishments wound up very close together

It is not effective today in Independence, Jackson County, or anywhere in the state.

After the municipal vote of 1914, the Independence city council passed an ordinance providing that those guilty of violating the public will beginning January 1, 1915, were punishable by a fine of not less than $300 ($6,809 in today's dollars) nor more than $1,000 ($22,697 in today's dollars) or imprisonment of not less than 30 days nor more than one year OR a combination of both fine and imprisonment.

What did Independence become in January 1915 as a result of the citizen's vote in 1914?

You confused me with the "effective January 2015" portion, which I now realize should have been 1915. Based on that change I'll vote for "Dry", aka, alcohol free.
