This clipping was folded up in the back of an old book given to me. I thought the classifieds were especially interesting.

Great!

September 5, 1947.

From what I remember of the Pictorial Shopper was that it had a couple newsy items and the rest was entirely advertising. There were free ads and paid ads. I guess the free adds were those small ones from private people.

Craig Siegfried is shown as the publisher and he also owned the other Independence daily newspaper and KIMO radio. The papers and the radio station were based in the 300 block of N. Osage, west side.

I noticed the Plaza Theater was advertised. It still had about five years to go. The Electric Theater seems to have been closed at the time of this edition although not by much. The Englewood Theater was a couple years away.

Independence Iron and Metal was that eyesore of a business that was located at Noland and Truman.

The telephone numbers are CL 6674, etc. I am guessing that at this point in time in order to make a phone call, one had to contact the operator and give her the number. At least for our neck of the woods that was how it was done. There might have been dialing right in town. I recall our first phone in '48 was a black phone with a smooth face and no dial. We had four people on our party line and our phone rang when any of those four peoples number was called. The difference was that for one house it was one ring, for the second house it was two rings, etc. Otherwise, you were supposed to ignore the call.

MRG is that your mom's beauty shop advertisement?

A good many of the private advertisements list an item or items for sale but no price.

A cost of one home is $3,500 and another is $4,000. My folks bought a home the next year and I am not sure of the price but their payments were $32 a month for fifteen years.

There is a good reason that no TVs are shown for sale. The first KC broadcast station is still two years away.

There is an ad wanting pin boys at Diamond Bowl.

Here is a close up of the beauty shop over Milgram's in the Major Tom 58 post.

I can recall the Helene Curtis beauty stuff from later TV advertising.

WOW YES that's it! And Sept 1947 would have been appropriate. Less than two months after marrying my Dad.

TYSM Major Tom got posting and WCHS for noting this.

There are a number of Pictorial Shopper advertisements in which the seller stresses "prewar quality."
