Yeah, you're talking about the general West Side vibe of LA, although there is also the surfer/skater/artist/Venice Beach counter culture over there, too. Both types of LA have been around a long time. Kind of Jennifer Aniston vs. Zooey Deschanel, or whatever.

Hipster or not, Indy ranked 10th worst-dressed city in the nation . So they're saying tennis shoes and Hoosier jerseys all year round are not fashionable?! All these low rankings Indy has been getting recently seem like a coordinated effort to make us feel bad. None of these rankings seem scientific to me.

I think its fair to say no one is ever going to confuse Broad Ripple Ave with Rodeo Drive.

I wonder if the least hipster cities are also the least fashionable cities? Seems like a pointless list, Indy has more frumpy looking people because they spent two hours walking around downtown? Sounds pretty scientific to me.

Y'all may have very good points about certain tech start-ups owing a fair amount to hipsterism, and some of those nerds at Google probably still dress hipster (let's face it--hipster attire is defiant, which usually means conspicuously nerdy).

But another aspect of hipster culture is a rejection of cultural displays of affluence...almost anti-yuppie in that regard. Even if a person has hipster origins, if he/she suddenly sells a successful start up for six or seven figures, that entrepreneur is going to have a hard time retaining credibility in hipster circles. It's almost as though the hipster has automatically graduated into yuppiehood, even if the hipster entrepreneur never really abjured the original hipster trappings.

That said, I've also noticed that virtually NO ONE self-identifies as a hipster. There was an amusing documentary short a few years ago by a young French woman living in Williamsburg, NYC (the epicenter of hipsterdom out there). When ever she would walk by someone with a microphone and ask "Are you a hipster?", the person would get really offended.

Hilarious.

Is hipster just the grunge fad of this generation? Will it be past and only a memory in people's minds 10 years from now?

Indy Star published an article about Indy being among worst dressed a couple of days ago. They asked people to send their pics to prove that Indy shouldn't be among worst dressed. After looking at the pics people sent, I know exactly why we're among the worst dressed, it's like these people thought the Indy Star was being sarcastic and sent their worst pics:
