I read in the NY Times that about 55% of foreign born latinos are here illegally. Furthermore, you do not get a visa for working at MCDonalds, Wal Mart etc. I'm not sure to what extend the companies know. I don't want to defend them, but I do think most do not know. Perhaps even don't care enough.
You need to educate yourself as to how e-verify actually works. It is over 95% accurate in detecting these phony and stolen I.D.'s.

It's sad that someone with so much to offer is intimidated by Americans that are, themselves, inept at the English language.

I find it amazing that we expect more out of immigrants than we do of our own children.
I wouldn’t say “few” people are articulate; but yes, many Americans lack proper grammar skills. As Chicagonut mentioned, language proficiency is generally an indication of education, or lack thereof. Moreover, there is a huge difference between an immigrant speaking with an accent, and illiteracy among the U.S.-born children of illegal aliens.

I expect most immigrants, other than English-speaking Canadians, to speak with an accent. My OB/GYN is an immigrant from Israel. He is absolutely brilliant, yet speaks with an accent. My ex is also a well-educated immigrant who speaks with an accent. Frankly, I have always considered his accent rather sexy.

Perhaps your coworker has other issues, because I encounter people on a daily basis who do not feel intimidated to speak English with an accent.

I can’t speak for you, but I have always emphasized proper grammar with my son. I don’t expect more from immigrants. I only expect them to at least attempt to learn English.

If an immigrant (or illegal alien) is uneducated in their OWN language it's a little hard to expect them to be articulate in another.

I've been here 10 years and my Aussie accent is still with me. Do I feel intimidated by the fact I speak English with an accent? Not at all. Your "friend" seems to have other issues frankly, as do you.

I haven't found a "majority" of Americans to be inept as you put it language wise.

In a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, yes there are some who do not speak english.

Same with hole-in-the-wall asian restaurants.
I don't know where you live but in my neck of the woods (Calif.) you would be hard pressed to hear any Hispanic person speaking English anywhere. That includes any restaurants, fast food or not, any department stores or other places of business. I have often wondered if that many could be illegal aliens even though we have a high percentage of them here. That is what makes me feel that even the legal ones do not want to assimilate to our language.

That’s a huge problem. It’s difficult to teach English to people who can’t even read or write in their native language.

Do you think there is any statistics on the percentage of people from an Hispanic background that are ethnically Indian and are very dark skinned and do not speak english and work in low skilled work in relation to legal status?

North americans have more amerindian blood than south americans.

No, we expect less illegal immigration and are pointing out the facts of illegal immigrants.

In my city, my state and many others, it is common to see all of the Hispanic workers working back in the kitchen, flipping the burgers, putting the lettuce on the buns and mopping the floors because they don't have the English skills to work with the public (register, waitress, etc.)

That's why illegal immigrants are behind-the-scenes and often stuck in the crevices of businesses because they can't do much else because of lack of skills and lack of English language. Any job that requires no communication with people are the jobs that are perfect for illegal immigrants. Spending a day in the fields, pushing a cleaning cart throughout a hotel hall, flipping some burgers in the back, working in a place that caters to other Spanish-speaking people, cleaning an office late at night when the non-Hispanic, cleaning some horse farm stalls, English-speaking people aren't there, cutting the grass and weedeating, are all perfect jobs for the illegal immigrant that speaks no English and can have the most LIMITED CONTACT with people as possible.

They is how they stay out of the public eye and the eye of people that may question if they are here legally or not.

They like it like that too.
