Here is one of the ugliest front ends on an SUV right now in my opinion...
2013 Mitsubishi Outlander... I dont know what the front end looks like, a drooped down frown or looks like something gapping for air?? All I know is I would never buy one and dont know of who would. Not a big seller, so no wonder. It would look much better if they would cut off the lower 3/4 of that ugly grill.
Rear just as hideous... I hate rear slanting and "upswooping" cargo area windows which seems to be the trend on many of todays smaller SUV's.
THE GOOD NEWS IS that there is an all-new 2014 Outlander on the way that I think is much nicer and I actually like it!! Hideous grill is gone and no rear slanting cargo area window!

I imagine the early design meetings involved a bunch of guys huddled around a Mercedes CLS.
I'd say it’s a fair bet that design groups at all automakers were looking at the first generation CLS which I strongly prefer to the current CLS. VW has its CC, Hyundai with the Sonata and then BMW/Audi put a twist on the four door coupe concept with their own designs. I'm sure I'm missing a few as well. It was a great design for sure (and I'm not generally too fond of MBZ cars).

It's because they were lazy and just made a taller Lancer out of it.
From a financial perspective it makes sense. Even the Hyundais look like each other tall or short even if they are better looking overall.

Although finances are always involved, the immediate reason is to create a family resemblance. In the U.S. market the EVO is Mitsu's fastest ride and they want that to translate to other cars (not that there are many left). I actually was not a fan of the current generation EVO X when it was first released (I thought the EVO 8 and 9 were much better looking cars) but it's grown on me over the years. The interior is still econo car but I think the EVO's stayed more true to their roots than the STI's.
Most auto makers try to visually link their various products. Audi has done this very well with their front end treatment, BMW's 3/5/7 series have long looked like larger/smaller versions of each other and Cadillac's design language is easily identifiable between its various makes. When you see a brand new model on the road that you’re not familiar with they want you to say “I’ve never seen that before but it looks like a BMW”.
