No they didn't, Copeland's in New Orleans is still open and there are locations all over the South and Midwest.

Copeland's restaurants are franchises. The Copeland's here closed because of tax issues.

Al Copeland owned the Popeye's chain and he filed bankruptcy after Popeye's acquired Church's Chicken and ended up losing Popeye's but that was in the early 90's.

Copeland went bankrupt with $39m in the bank. Great deal. Sold the Popeye's business but kept his spice company, with a lifetime contract to provide the spices to Popeyes.

As for the Copeland's, spoke to somone who said there was a divorce that went ugly, and another person told the location was not as great as they had hoped.

The Copeland's in Brentwood (south of Nashville) used to be pretty popular, but sadly that area around Cool Springs has seen numerous restaurants come and go. I never realized that location at Airport used to be a Copeland's...seems like an odd restaurant location.

But Popeye's had to pay annual royalties to use the fried chicken recipe until they purchased it from Al Copeland's family for $43 million.

I'd totally forgotten about that place. Didn't they make Martin stoves? And they sold coal too as I recall. They were open when I first came to Huntsville but closed not long after that.

This will be really nice.

The concept of stovehouse project is a little confusing to me since I never have seen a similar project before. Is it similar to open space food courts like Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia? When I search "urban food garden," google shows actual gardens, not food courts.

Kinda cool how little districts emerge over time. Pretty sure "Westside" wasn't a thing when I grew up in Huntsville, much like Parkside wasn't a thing here in Birmingham until the past 5-10 years.
