I live in 3rd ward and its not bad at all, try Memphis, New Orleans, or Birmingham, its nothing but money to made in the H.
Can thank Zoning for this. Because of zoning, Houston probably never had the chance to have those types of neighborhoods. But make no mistake. It's there in the city. They may not look like the areas that you see in Memphis, New Orleans, and Birmingham, but be on your guard when you are in certain hoods in Houston. Yeah, there's money to be made in Houston, just like any other large city. But they do have their problems.

Good post though.
Thanks, but Eastwood is definitely in Third Ward. Just barely, though.

You can be in a house worth $20k on an $80k plot of land due to good location. What you pay says nothing about how nice the area is without the breakdown of land + improvement.

There was an example here in another thread of a dilapidated $20k shotgun shack on a $185k plot of land very close to downtown. Some guy was passed on on the street in front of it. I'd most definitely consider that the hood. Completely different story vs. a $185k house on a $20k plot of land in Katy.

Weird. I suppose it is technically, but I don't know anyone who lives over there who considers their hood part of Third Ward. I don't know anyone in Third Ward who considers that part of Third Ward!

Default I think this will settle the discussion

Here is a page and crime stats from HFD's District 68 site (Remember: These are guys that get called to the scene to try to stop the bleeding)
District 68 (http://www.firehouse68.com/district.aspx - broken link)

I thought this comment was interesting:
"(Not to make light of other areas of Houston, we feel the need to mention that it is just as dangerous for firefighters of the 5th Ward/Denver Harbor area, Acres Homes/Inwood area, and the 3rd Ward/South-central area as well.)"

This is NOT Mr. Roberts neighborhood.

LOL if we're just talking about safety I believe i can walk 99% of any of those places and be fine. 'bad sections' are within a few block radius so unless a 'neighborhood' is that small I do not these Super Neighborhoods = 'Hoods. Alief and Sharpstown does have alot of slum apartment complexes where most of these incidents happen

i believe this is the latest (2008 counts)

Houston Crime Statistics - Top 10 Beats by Number of Type I Incidents Reported

If i have one of those napalm bombs i'd drop it on Bissonnet cor Cook

Never been to NYC but have been to Chicago. I assume Chicago's hoods are very similar to NYC. Houston's hoods do not look as grimy as the Northeast or Midwestern cities. That shouldn't be a surprise because LA or San Francisco hoods do not look as bad either. Doesn't mean a thing though. The small houses and especially the small apartment complexes are very run down with many shady things happening in them in all three cities (HOU,SF,LA). You might as well call them lowrise projects (most of them garden style 3 level apartments). Highrise projects are not that big in Houston.
