No need to go to the beach to go fishing
there's lots of lakes where you will have much more fun fishing with a little kid.

I go to Burroughs Park on the SW side of The Woodlands.
When they get tired of fishing, they can go and play in the playground or ride their bicycle around the 1 mile track.

I've also seen kids fishing in North Shore park in The Woodlands.

Pointers...
make sure there's not a lot of debris in the water and it'll save you a lot of frustration and don't go a windy day.

Harris County stocks some of their ponds in the spring. Find the one near you, call to be sure there is fish in it.

At that age I would find a pond and go fish for catfish with catfish bait or bream (sunfish/bass and the like) with worms. Fish the bank, not the middle for bream. Use a bobber – it's more entertaining for a 5 year old. Also, keep the trip short.

Galveston Fishing Pier. Not sure how much it is for kids but adults it's $10-12 for 24 hours. This time of year you're bound to catch some shark pups and hardhead catfish. When my friends come down we always take the kids there and everyone catches fish.

Thanks for the response. They are all great advice but I'm particularly interested in the pier. Is there one in particular that you would recommend? Also will I need a fishing license and if so where would I obtain one?
