Are all fishing options in the Galveston area around $400 and up?

SIL and her DH are coming for a visit in October and BIL would like to do some fishing. The last time he went was with his son in St. Peterburg, FL where they paid $70 each.

Since I know nothing about fishing, I'm not even sure what to look for but in my preliminary searches (they don't currently have internet which is why I'm searching), all I'm turning up are fishing guides starting at $400 for 1/2 days.

Thanks for any recommendations or at least pointing me in the right direction.

Many people around Galveston fish from piers and jetties, completely free of charge. It's often more fulfilling to take a DIY (do it yourself) approach, than to depend on others.

Sounds like Florida may have been a lot more reasonable in cost. I bet the fishing there was much better too. Just think of the difference between Florida's clear blue water, and Galveston's brownish-green murk.

Don't forget they need a license. Out of state for a day or two is cheap ($16 per day?).

That might mean something if you're doing some diving but doesn't mean anything when it comes to fishing. That mud is nutrient for tiny fish, which larger fish feed on, etc, etc. That's why those muddy black lakes from Sabine on east through Louisiana are great for fishing.

And when you go with a guide way offshore you're looking to catch bigger ones that can be found off the East Beach jetty. Make room in your deep freezer!

I always fish at Rollover Pass over on the Bolivar side. It's a man made threshhold between the bay and the ocean. You can catch some HUGE reds this time of year. Over at Crystal Beach you can pull your vehicle up to the water and wade fish in the mornings and catch some nice trout. If you go on the beaches on the Bolivar side you will need a $10 dollar parking tag that last a year and you can get it at almost any store or gas station over there. Some of the peirs are open but I'm not a fan of bumping elbows with strangers all day and untangling my lines with people who don't speak english.

BAy Fishing in Galveston is great. My boys always come home with snapper. You can also try rig fishing for larger game fishing. check out the above charters or Galveston.com for others.
