Yep, nothing says world class dining like pizza, food trucks, fusion food, and bbq.

LOL,Austin??? The best food I've had in Austin was at my Uncle's House and Round Rock donuts. Out of the major cities I would consider Austin to be at the bottom. Like others have said if you want "edgy quirky" fusion food i'm pretty sure Austin would top that list. But overall food scene, Houston wins hands down imo. Austin is not even touching East Texas cities when it comes to good food. Of course they have more variety and a bigger food scene. But I haven't had the best places in Austin even some the locals say are the best places to eat still would be like an average joint in Houston.

You do realize Austin's influence on the culinary scene in Houston?

Uchi(current Houston's darling), food trucks(1st in Tx), Torchy's, etc. are from Austin. Like it or not, they have set off an interesting trend on the scene.

But don't worry, after they're successful you will eventually claim them as your own, just like Uchi. I remember the hating you had on Uchi and Katsuya (LA) when they first arrived. Just like some here have on Oxheart since they're from NYC, but cry about Mark's when Oxheart is leaps and bounds above. People came around on Uchi since it is from Texas. The outside chefs and restaurateurs are the ones pushing the envelope and the scene. You should welcome the change.

The only places that are top notch and kind of indigenous to this town is Vietnamese, Cajun Seafood and Breakfast Klub. Everything else you can get at most major cities, just a little bit more pricier.

You're trying to reason with the guy who calls anyone who says anything good about Houston a "Houston homie" and who has a strange Austin obsession. He's wrong about what "most people" think too. Good luck!

I'm from Austin but lived in Houston a few years .... Houston has a far superior scene and choices. Austin was downright bad outside a few categories ten+ years ago, but has greatly improved, especially the last 5 years or so. Still though, nothing on Houston's.

Top Chef didn't film in Houston because Houston refused to pay Bravo. San Antonio is the only who admitted they paid, but I still think Austin and Dallas did too and are just keeping that "confidential."

I will give you a short list of good Houston places to eat:
Cuchara-n/k
El Real-its tex mess
Katsuya-from LA-better than uchi unless you like "rolls"
Hawthorn’s-on my list to try
Hugo's-7/10
La Fisheria-on my list
Latin Bites-n/k
Liberty Kitchen-notch below Roost
L'Olivier-5/10
Melange Creperie-5/10
Oxheart (not from NY)-9.5/10, chefs from NYC
Pass & Provisions-9/10 for Provisions, haven't tried Pass
Philippe-overrated, but nice atmosphere and foie gras. Try Chez Nous
Ristorante Cavou-n/k
Reef-overrated, try Wink
Roost-6/10
Triniti- try Justine
Sorrel Urban Bistro-n/k
Solea-it's a wine bar-any place that needs a label...
Underbelly-overrated-Barley Swine is better. They should keep next door and get rid of underbelly
Bayou City Pasta-underrated
Bedford-n/k
Cafe Annie-past its prime
Da Marco-see above, Enoteca Vespaio is better
Hugo’s-already mentioned
Lucio's-on my list
Marks-8/10
Tampico-rather do Golden Seafood
Asia Market-n/k

A ton of hole in the wall places on Bellaire, ect...[/quote]

Austin only lacks Vietnamese and Cajun food. I agree though the Houston food scene has improved with the influx of out-of-town chefs and restaurateurs.

The only thing that shines in Bellaire besides a few Vietnamese places is the Sichuan food. Everything else is slightly above average-including Dim Sum.

pach84, you're bananas. How is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural metropolis like Houston not going to have excellent world cuisine over Austin? I've been there several times and eaten all around and the food was not to die for.

And Austin doesn't lack Vietnamese. The first time I ever had it was in Austin. Once on Sixth Street too.

Talk about being an Austin booster!
