The hurricane itself was obviously not that big a deal, except for the fact that nobody took very many precautions because no one expected the deluge that ensued, probably not even the hyperventilating tri-state media that does End of the World coverage for just about every single storm. The real problem is with the aftermath. Ike was a more violent storm, but in the aftermath, temperatures were balmy, and surviving the heat only requires drinking enough water. Seasonal overnight temperatures in the tri-state area are near freezing, and people do die from hypothermia, so there's a much bigger humanitarian emergency there until heat can be restored (oil, gas or electric).

These insecure comments like the OP are what I come to expect from the locales of Houstonshire. This thread should be made a sticky for people who ask, "how are people from Houston?"

The OP's baseless gripes are no more annoying than your ridiculous generalizations. Most Houstonians here do not agree with what cheryjohns is saying.

BTW, a "locale" is a place or setting. "Locals" are the people.

The OP has since retracted her statements. No need for the peanut gallery days late to chime in on something has been discussed ad nauseum. Have a _/.

Time now to think about the victims.

Did you listen to any of the radio stations here after the Sandy struck?

It was the main topic of discussion and many of the comments were identical. It was discussed in my law class as well. It is not just chery.

It should have only been about the victims and the economic ramifications, not personal issues.

You have to take into account this is rare for the NE while Houston goes threw this every 10 yrs are so.. you can not blame them for freaking out over something that happens once every 100 years vs a city that deals with it at least every 10.

The problem was not the winds but the flooding, which has knocked out power for a good week to come, and has also ruined natural gas pipelines, and the sewage system. Staten Island was just about wiped out if the news reports are accurate. All those homes swept away, or ironically burned out! There's probably no way to jam all the people who lack heat into shelters before the next storm comes with frigid temps.

I was waiting for the 'union games' to start.

Non-union Alabama crews say storm help rejected - Houston Chronicle

Leave them without power for a few more days until the IBEW can get to them.

You were waiting for that huh? Just sitting in your room, staring at your monitor while you rubbed your hands in glee waiting for the moment when an anti-union news story would break so you could repost it on the internet and show the world just how evil organized labor is.

Also the story is one guy on a crew stating he thought some paperwork said he had to affiliate with a union despite the union, the utility company and the governor all saying that isn't the case and numerous non-union crews working there.
