Our last house was a custom build and 3,000 sq. ft. on 6 acres. 5 years ago we moved into my childhood home in a neighboring county after my Dad died. We now live in about 2,200 sq. ft. and had to make quite an adjustment in how we live. We have 2 small children and have de-cluttered A LOT. We still have 6 acres here, too and a huge detached garage/storage/workshop so we're not too squeezed for storage space. We have 4br/2ba on a crawlspace - no basement - with living room, den, dining room, sunroom and a 2 car detached garage on 1 1/2 story. There is absolutely no wasted space anywhere in this home's footprint.

We live in an area where there is lots of new development and many of my and childrens' friends live in homes that are 3,500 sq. ft and up. My home is tiny compared to theirs, but the adults always comment on how homey and comfortable my house is. We do plan on adding on in the next 3 years or so. I want a new, larger dining room and expand a current ground floor bedroom into a master suite. It would likely bump the total sq. ft. up to just under 3,000.

my wife and I, with no kids bought a 3100 sq ft house. We live in the middle of both of the family, and wanted a place big enough to celebrate our holidays with everyone here and not be crowded. We don't use all of it everyday, but I am glad to have this house.

1760 sq ft when I bought it, but I've since converted a small screened-in porch into a 4-season sunroom (125 sq ft); the porch is a 2-story space, so I'm converting the space on the upper floor into a reading alcove off the main bedroom.

With a very open floor-plan on the first floor (kitchen/livingroom on one side of the house and fireplace/sitting room and dining room on the other), 3 bedrooms and two baths (one on each level) for just me and my two cats, the size is just perfect for me. Other than the 3rd (small) bedroom, there isn't a space I don't use on a daily basis, some rooms more than others depending on the season and the time of day. (Second/guest room comes in very handy)

There is also an 800 sq ft unfinished basement (ok, a small tool room, but not really livable space)...

My only regret is no garage... for the NH winters, that's a tough one.... and the one addition I'll be making in the not-too-distant future.

About 2,000 square feet with another 1,000 is the basement (unfinished). 2 car, 4 bds, 1.5 baths. Love our house, but hope to upgrade in a few years to something just a little bigger with at least another full bath.

Ours is right around 1,400 sf. 4 br, 1.5 ba. Not sure why people with less than 3 or 4 kids live in anything larger than 2,500 sf.
My family (which consists of myself and my husband and two cats) are very happy in our 14X56 mobile home. The "livable area" is something less than 784 square feet due to closets, etc., but it is quite enough.

I have lived in larger homes in the past, and it is just more to keep clean. I have better things to do than vacuum. Only having to keep one bathroom clean is much better.
