Well goody for your aunt. My great grandmother had an outhouse - so what is your point. You don't see the hardship? Well, how wonderful for you. I think you must be jealous or something...why should the number of bathrooms we have mean anything to you? Get a life.
Our house is 3500 sq feet. We have 4 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths. We have 3 teenagers and I would NEVER survive with one bathroom with 5 people getting ready for the day at the same time. We have a very large yard, well landscaped and very green. We use the yard a lot-we like having the room, as do our kids to play in the yard. Our dog LOVES having the room to run.
Our house is just the right size for us now. When the kids are gone we may downsize but probably not-we will probably add a master bedroom to the main floor instead-who knows.
our house is just a smidge under 2000 SF, single story. its just me and my wife and we're in our mid 20s...... perfect size for us!!! 3 bedroom 2 baths...so we each have our own offices in our house. one office doubles as a guest bedroom.
2500 SF, two stories, 3BR/2.5BTH house. The house seems to be an okay size - sometimes it feels too big, other times too small. The FROG (aka, the south's basement) has a separate staircase, so if you are in a bedroom, you need to walk downstairs, across the house, and up the stairs to the FROG. There is a family room and living room, but sometimes I wish the family room was a bit larger - thankfully we opened up the wall from the kitchen to the FR so it seems a bit bigger. I would combine the FR with the LR, but with only standard 8ft ceilings, I think it would be a bit caveish.
However, we have a gorgeous 20x15 screened in porch in the backyard, and the previous owner did a lot of landscaping, so down south, I believe we will do most entertaining outside (after allllll the renovations lol).
How big is the livable area of your house (that is, how big is your house, excluding uninhabitable basements, etc.)? And how many bedrooms / baths does it contain?
Ours is right around 1,400 sf. 4 br, 1.5 ba. Not sure why people with less than 3 or 4 kids live in anything larger than 2,500 sf.
Ours is 2550 under air / liveable, with another 1200 in the attic and 1200 in the basement, both unfinished. 5 bedrooms 2 bathrooms.
We moved in with 4 kids then the oldest joined us. Then 2 of our children's friends came to live with us for a while. So at one point there were 7 teens in a 5 bedrooms house. A bit packed, but we managed. Especially since we'd moved from a 1100 square foot 3 bedroom house with 5 kids.
Right now we only have the 2 youngest still left at home, 17 and 16 years old. We're starting the renovations now and plan on selling as soon as the youngest moves out and building a cabin to retire in.
The cabin though will be 4 floors for just hubby and I. We like to spread out. Each floor will be quite small though.
Basement = huge storage room for canned and dry goods, also will double as a storm shelter, a bar and game room area, fitness area and a TV room, 1/2 bath.
Main floor = living / dining / kitchen combo, bedroom and bath.
Second floor = 2 guest rooms and full bath.
Loft level = Sleeping room with outdoor screen sleeping porch, sitting room surrounded with book cases, large master bath, walk in closet.
Sounds big but considering each floor is only about 24x30, it's not huge. Big enough for the kids to come visit for holidays and friends to come stay a week. I'm looking forward to the kids being gone, but do want to have room for visitors. Though I've been tempted to eliminate the second floor and put up a 2 bedroom guest cabin...

That's an interesting layout. Three-level houses are common, but a four-level home, especially with that small of a surface area? That'll look interesting.
My home is under 800 sq ft with 2 bedrooms and 1.5 baths. I'm a frugal person and want to keep my retirement money to travel...not pay taxes, utility bills, etc.
If using HSF or "fully finished", we have around 4000 sqft on the first and second floors.
If one includes the basement, which is partially finished, and definitely "livable" considering that we lived in it for 7 months and it has full bath, but is not centrally heated/cooled, that is another 2000 sqft.
The house is a 5 bedroom, 3 bath.
