In general Kenmore appliances are pretty good. Do you want a front or top load washer? Gas or electric dryer?

Make sure the two pieces are stackable rather than all-in-one, if you can help it. That way, if one goes bad, you only have to replace that unit, and not the whole thing. IIWY, I'd look at the gardenweb laundry forum and epinions for extensive discussions on this.

I have a Maytag Neptune, one piece front load washer/dryer. Love it. I have a gas dryer, the rest of it is the usual. It's quiet, does a great job. No complaints in 8 months of ownership.

We have LG front loader washer and dryer from home depot, separate units,wife loves them both,washer uses very little water and spins them very dry.Very little drying time.

I used an old Maytag stacked unit for over ten years and it was fine... was in the condo when I got there and still going strong when I sold the condo.
