I know this is probably a dumb question, but I've never owned my own washer and dryer before.

I have a condo with a small closet-type area for a stackable washer and dryer. I ordered the appliances from a big brand-name store. When they came to deliver it the first time, they told me they couldn't install it because there was no 220 electrical line. Also, when they took out the old washing machine (only a washing machine) that was there, I noticed that the valves were corroded and one was dripping.

I took a day off last week and had an electrician and plumber come in to get the area ready. Yesterday the store's delivery people came back with the washing machine and dryer, but they had screwed up when they wrote the new ticket and didn't have it down for installation. Now I've got a washing machine sitting in my living room.

I've had to take a lot of days off to close, move and do other house things, and this store doesn't deliver or install weeknights, so I have to wait another entire week to get the appliances installed. I'm thinking of telling the store to go screw and getting my own installation person, but who would that be? A plumber? There is a "stacking kit" to put one appliance on top of the other and then the washer would have to be hooked into the faucet things and the dryer to the vent (it is an electric dryer, no gas hookup.)

I want to know just what kind of person I need before I advertise on craigslist or something. I'm sure there is someone out there who would come after 6 p.m.

Any decent handyman can do this, actually. Check the services section in your local craigslist for one.

Don't forget to check license and insurance.

If you can find at least two people to help you hoist the dryer on top of the washer, do it yourself. There's nothing to hooking up the washer supply and drain lines.

Otherwise, I'd let the store do it. They screwed up the work order in the first place.

I scheduled for next Saturday with the store--you are right, they should do it, but I didn't want to wait another whole week to have a washing machine.

I'm gone from 6 a.m to 6:30 at night, and the idea of having to come home and haul baskets of laundry to a laundromat after work doesn't appeal to me, but I have no choice.

I know, I know, it's not as if I have to go to the river and beat them with a rock, but I will be 52 in two weeks and I'm feeling it with this latest move. I'm still exhausted from moving and having to lug heavy boxes and clothes and whatnot from the old place into the car and then the car into the new place. At least I know with a 30-year mortgage I will probably just die there and won't have to do this ever again!

Can't you just do it? It can't be that hard... plug in power cord, connect water to washer... connect dryer to vents... is there anything else? If you are not sure, I am sure looking at youtube "installing washer or dryer" will have a video walkthrough... save you money too...

I've done it before...it is not that bad, but there ARE a few extra things you must do.
1) You must install the proper bracket stack kit that you get with the set. It is an extra part you must buy. You cannot just set the dryer on top of the washer.
2) Electric dryers come either 4 wire or 3 wire, dependent on the receptacle the electrician installed. The correct cord must be installed on the dryer.
3) Exhaust must be installed properly. You must know if the exhaust vent is side or rear discharge....if you need a side discharge, some models can sell a side vent kit that must be installed. If you can, these are nice as they allow the unit to be almost flush with the back wall.

Make sure it is level........these types MUST be level or else they will shimmy all over. Install braided water hoses also...not the cheap rubber ones, and DON"T use the old ones, you are just asking for trouble.

Yes. LIFT dryer up on top of washer? Not sure how the stacking kit works, although I'm sure there are instructions in the box. New Jersey woman found crushed under dryer...

But other than that, good point about doing it myself--I don't KNOW if that's all it takes. I've never had a washer and dryer before that wasn't already there when I moved in.

It wouldn't be an issue if the house was ready for installation when it was delivered and scheduled for installation. It's not their fault the units could not be installed. If they were charging you extra for the second visit and they were not prepared to do the installation, you are right to be upset. But if they are not charging you for any return visit, be glad since they were ready to do it but you were not.

I would wait for them because unless you have done this before, it could be confusing especially if you don't have the little extras (right stacking kit, right lenght of lines, vents and connectors) or even the specific knowledge of installing that unit. Also, if anything goes wrong with the installation, it's on them. If you do it, it's on you.

The house was ready, the company screwed up. This is all on them, imho.

No, they came, the house was not ready so instead of dumping the items in the living rooms and saying there will be a charge to return for the installation, they rescheduled the delivery and install for another date. It was that second date that they screwed up, BUT the first date came and went and the house wasn't ready! I don't see why they didn't just leave stuff and charge for a second house call. The OP is upset because of all the time they have involved in this. But the time they spent on plumbing, electrical, and closing and moving in and..., that's on the OP and isn't any reason to be pissed at the delivery/installers. Had everything been ready when they first came as was planned, this wouldn't be an issue.
