For instance, if one is averaging 75 mph, they need not stop in both Grants and Gallup for food, a hotel, etc.
Yes, you're right, and funny coincidence, a few hours after I made this post, I watched the movie "Cars," which was exactly about that--small, dying towns in the West along the old Rt. 66. I feel sorry for these towns and even can see the yesteryear charm in them, but they still look awful and I wouldn't want to live in them! It is a shame, I wish they were doing better.

You hit it right on the head. Salem, Indiana is a hole. It's a hole because the local population doesn't really see the need for progress and good paying jobs but would instead have a few stinky little low wage factories. Education here is non-existent as is people with common sense. Not to mention a bad drug problem. Salem doesn't even have a Wal Mart close unless you want to drive at least a half hour to get there. All for a town of 7000 people and a county of 30000.

[mod] Opinions are fine. Inflamatory material is not[/mod]

Stay away from Southern Indiana in general unless you want low wages, crap jobs, and live in poverty. Way to go Mitch!!

East Harlem in NYC. Few areas can compare. Led NYC in crime this year with a rate of 1,600+ per 100,000. Most say it 's crime rate was in the 2,000's per 100,000 but the population in this area is hard to determine so they just gave it a broad range. The majority of the people live in poverty and half the population lives in public housing. Last year the 23rd and 25th precinct which cover the general area recorded a combined 20 murders. East Harlem roughly covers an area that is 5 blocks across and 40 blocks up. An area that small also is home to 18 NYCHA developments. This is the LARGEST CONCENTRATION of projects in the world.

Enough talk:

Now for the public housing:

Carver Houses

Clinton Houses

Corsi Houses

East River Houses

Holmes Towers

Issacs Houses

Jackie Robinson Houses

Jefferson Houses

Johnson Houses

Lehman Houses

Lexington Houses

Lincoln Houses

Metro North Plaza

Park Ave Houses

Taft Houses

Wagner Houses

Washington Houses

Wilson Houses

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This folks is the project mecca of the US. While some parts of Harlem have seen gentrification, East Harlem has yet improve. Whoever decided to dump so many projects in such a small area, forever cursed the area. Public Housing as we all know is synonymous with crime, drugs, gangs, poverty, murders etc......too bad so many had to be dumped in one place .
